WP riding?
I may be going to ride a friend's horse next week. She said he's 16hh, black, sweet sweet sweet, 17 years old, and used to show when he was around 3-5 in western pleasure, trail, etc. He was never used for cow work because of his size. He's been ridden english as well.

I was just wondering how you are supposed to ride a WP horse. I'm used to riding english and dressage-ish horses. I'm assuming I probably won't need as much rein contact...

Western Pleasure horses are trained to react to the most subtil touch on the reins. The hard part will be adapting to the horse, but it probably won't take you very long. It's all about gentleness and precision.

Also, those horses are very calm and aren't afraid of just anything, if they can be frightened at all!

This should be a most pleasant experience. I hope it brings you what you seek! Please let us know how you feel afterwards.

Thanks! He sounds like a very sweet horse and I can't wait to meet him. So basically just be light handed? I'll definitely log about how it goes! ;)

I train and show western pleasure horses and Most Western Pleasure horses these days are taught to spur-stop(you press your feet on them and they stop) but being that he is 17 he most likely has not been taught that way, but they do have extremely light mouths so as long as you dont use a harsh hand you should be fine...have fun!!!
