Buying a helmet
OK, I'm thinking about buying a helmet. I have never bothered with one, but my new mare has me seriously thinking about it. I don't compete, I don't jump. Mostly trail riding and the odd flat lesson. I don't want to spend $200, but I want to make sure my money is well-spent.
Preferably, it should be something I can use year round. Maybe a removeable liner? Or adjustable so I can wear a toque (Can you tell I'm Canadian, eh?)
Troxel helmets are really cheap but really good. I've had mine for years and i used it as a schooling helmet and it has saved my life multiple times. I was even run straight into a tree head first and the only thing that happened to the helmet was a scratch. I believe i only paid like $60 but mine.
We have them for $42. They are light weight.. the look good and they will save your brain! http://gallopinggrape.com/troxelspirit.aspx
Absolutely get a helmet :) In America there are many lightweight, stylish and cool designs, including lots that are more western-style if that's what you ride. You don't need an old battered lid xD
:D I have a Troxel, it's not anything super fancy- it's not a show helmet. It's for schooling/training (riding) & not too expensive! I am unsure of the actual price but it deff. wasn't over $100, maybe not even $100. They are very nice!
I have a Troxel as well, I got it a couple years ago and I know it wasn't more than $50.
I love my Troxel. It's lightweight, breathable, and easily adjustable. I think it was under $50. They come in great styles and colors, and i was able to find the perfect one for me. Their website is: www.troxelhelmets.com if you want to take a look. :)
There are hundreds of helmet brands and series out there. All of them will fit differently. If you don't want to spend money on a really good helmet, at least make sure its one that is approved. Other that that, we can't really give you an opinion on which one you should be going for. Go out to a tack store and try a few within your price range.
Well, thanks for the support. I have looked at the Troxel actually. But what's the difference between a $50 helmet and a $150 helmet besides the name and style? Is there a difference in the warranty? The options? The quality (as far as safety goes)? And how do you all deal with riding in cold weather with a helmet on? How do you keep your ears and face warm? I ride when it's -20 celcius on a sunny day. Then on the hand, how does the -20 helmet work when it's +20 celcius in the summer? I really have no idea. No one I ride with wears a helmet. Even the kids, except a bike helmet sometimes.
After the helmet, I'm going to investigate vests... (can you tell some of my friends have been hurt lately?)
You could get something like this http://www.tackroominc.com/dublin-warmersib-p-568.html to keep your ears warm when it's cold. I don't have a pair myself though, so I can't tell you if they work or how comfortable they are, just a suggestion :)
