Cough and Runny Nose - What's Okay?
So over the past few weeks Walker has developed a cough and runny nose. In the beginning I didn't notice too much, just a little drip here and there and a cough. Now though I'm getting worried, his cough hasn't gotten better and I finally got a video of it. His nose is running like crazy, not any weird colors but still way more than usual. I opened his stall when I got to the barn and he had snot just hanging and smeared on the side of his face -- eck!
The vet comes out in a week or so to check up on another horse so I think I'm going to have her take a look at him too!
Should I possibly have her out sooner? Sorry for the background music in the arena, didn't have time to switch it off before he started coughing. If it's sideways it should change in a little bit!
The babies playing with DH target he left in the arena in the end of the video.
My horse has similar symptoms, but he only coughs when I ride, he'll cough a bit as we work and it has gotten worse recently. I originally thought it was allergies but now that it is progressing I am planning on calling a vet out. Just to make sure (: His nose has gotten less runny, it really never was truly runny, I would just notice a bit of clear snot in his nose. But the cough still bothers me. Even if it is nothing, I am super paranoid about everything with my boy and just want to check it out with a vet. I can post when I hear a report from the vet, in case it is similar to your issue :-)
Take his temperature AM and PM and see where it is. If there is no elevation in Temp, You are not going to do any good with antibiotics or most other treatments. I am not great on steroids or cough syrup. I would first try wetting his hay every day for a week. Then, when you do see a Vet, you can rule out hay particles or dust.
Of course, if there is a fever, you should have a Vet out and determine the source. A simple CBC will tell you if it is bacterial and would respond to antibiotics.
