Coronet Band Cut
Yesterday I turned out my silly stallion before he got his feet done, and OF COURSE he would cut himself right above his coronet band on his front right hoof. The farrier looked at it and said I should just watch it.
But I wanted to know what you guys think.
All I did was hose it off with water and sprayed some cut heal wound spray on it. I didn't wrap it as I feel that wounds heal faster when being exposed to air.
You cleaned it and put some antiseptic on it, so as your farrier said, just keep an eye on it. As long as you don't see signs of infection, just let it be and resist the urge to continue to clean it. Most folks over treat minor injuries and cause them to take longer to heal by continuing to scrub and irritate them, pick scabs, etc. Our vet has a saying...clean it and then treat using "benign neglect", i.e. nature does a pretty good job of healing wounds.
BTW, if the injury actually affects the coronet band, you may see some slight deformity (like a slit) as the hoof grows out. This is typically just cosmetic and nothing to worry about.
Thanks! Yea I've never been the horse owner that fusses over minor injuries. As long as its not oozing blood or causing any lameness/discomfort, I usually just let it heal on its own. The disinfectant that I purchased has really great reviews so hopefully everything heals well *knock on wood*
