my horse is "crying"!
My older horse has had watery eye's for a couple of weeks and lots of white gunk comin' out of his eye's - then the white gunk smears on his hair up to 3 or 4 inches below his eye's, creating a icky crusty mess... no runny nose though.
What can I do to help him get over this? The weather has been changing a lot latley going from 0F to 40F = would this affect him.
That classic Vit A deficiency. The Vit A that is stored in the liver is becoming depleted (they've been off green grass for a few months) and this is the time of year I start seeing it too especially on the older horses. The most natural remedy is 1/2# of carrots every day until green grass comes back in.
wow, that's a lot of carrots! Has anyone else heard of this?
Would alfalfa work, instead of carrots? Like 3rd cutting?
The horse could have an eye infection, (bacterial or fungal), a scratch, or ERU. Could even be simple case of needing nasal-lacrimal duct flushed. Best not to mess with eyes and have a vet do a stain, view and culture if necessary.

Alfalfa does have more Vit A (beta carotene) than grass hays but it does deteriorate over time and will have very little to none by spring. Did he do this last winter and did it go away on it's own come spring? There are other cheaper and easier options to getting the A in him but he won't enjoy it as much.
I have only owned him for a month or two so I don't know about last year.
so alfalfa would work for now but by Feb. or March he would need other sources?
The alfalfa has higher Vit A but you won't see the eyes clear up on just that. He needs more.
okay. Like what?
I need to know WHAT I need to feed him.
WHAT HE IS ON NOW: hay(all he wants): grazing if he wants : a few apples every day.
I'm gonna put him on: 4 oz. ground flax, for his dandruff/dry skin.
I have STOCK AND STABLE feed that I could put him on ( for working equine )
* Vitamin A would help cure dry skin too, right?
So what could I put him on to help, besides alfalfa?
What other products do you have available to you? S&S is a poor quality all livestock feed that unless you're offering it as just a treat, he'll do much better on something else. Can you get Hoffman's loose minerals? (Canadian product)
