Bitless, hackamore... decisions decisions
My mare has the worlds softest mouth and is very responsive to seat. I ride her on the flat in a german silver french link and she loves it. She is super soft, responsive and happy.
However jumping she is a bit more of a handful. Now this is not a "you need to fix her flat work" because her flat is amazing. Same with pole work. I could ride her bridleless if I wanted as she is so responsive to the seat. So its not a missing element in our flat work. Plus all winter our jumps are put away and its dressage dressage dressage and no stirrup and no reins work.
I want to ride her bitless for cross country and stadium. Now I am facing the decision of which way to go. Hackamore or bitless? Because she can lose her brain from time to time I would prefer something with a bit more of a "woah" if I need it. I am light in my seat and light in my hands.
Sadly bitless is not popular in my area so borrowing is out of the question. I am thinking of trying the mechanical hack like so:
Should I got bitless like so:
I use an aeron mack riding halter. Its got rings that aren't on the side, they hang like shanks, almost, and the creator jumps in them.
I like mine, it is very nice and sturdy. You can customize color and amount of knots. Stifness too I think.
Have you considered instead going up to a smooth three piece draw gag instead? They are a lot softer, same mouthpiece, but a little more "Hey stupid, I'm still up here" than a snaffle.
I'm not sure what is legal for jumping, but for a strong bitless horse I like a Little S hackamore or a Pozzi hack. Generally both are thought of as barrel racing equipment but I see no difference between a strong barrel horse and a strong jumper, except one comes off the ground and the other gets in it.
Oh right, also, have you considered just putting a noseband on a loose ring snaffle? That did it for my old mare.
