do jumping horses, jump fences?
I do not ride english, I know about it but Im a western rider.
I just had a random thought, if your horse is taught to jump, would he jump or be tempted to jump fences in a corral or pasture? Just curious
not unless they have a very good reason ! lol
i dont think they jump fences any more than other horses, i only know a few horses who are fence jumpers, but i guess only one of them jumped a fence before they were trained to jump.
yeah, i dont see my horses jumping fences, i just wondered if a horse who is used to jumping like really high jumps and doing jumping events, if they would jump a little fence just because they can, or if they just know thats a fence and they dont jump those or something lol
Some horses will just jump out of a field for the fun of annoying their owners!
One of the worse horses I ever knew was the first QH to be imported to the UK. He was not even broken to ride and would jump in and out of fields as he fancied.
My horse has only jumped the fence once and it was to get back in with her friends after we took her out of the pasture and put her in to a paddock so she would be easier to catch for a show the next day. She was put in to the paneled round pen after. My grandpa's horse jumped out of the pen last summer and was missing for 3 days after he got in with the other horses and was chased by the gelding that hates him.
Some big eventer actually got asked that question once. Her answer was similar to this.
Horses are naturally pretty lazy animals. Unless they have a darn good reason, they won't see a need to jump out of their enclosure. Of course, this doesn't apply to every horse - some horses just really want to be with their buddies, and will gladly hop pasture fences. Other horses seemingly jump them for no reason. But actually, these horses aren't the grand prix jumpers. Horses that are trained to jump big are trained to listen to their riders - if the rider isn't telling them to use all their energy and jump the fence, why bother? It's like someone asking you to run cross country, 50 miles, at a run. Some people would do this just because they love it. But most people wouldn't go anywhere near it, unless there was some big prize at the end! Right? Same with horses.
No more than any other horse in my experience - any horse will jump out given the right circumstances.
The worst I had was a pony that did it from a year old and was never taught to jump - she was just bored as she stopped doing it when she started working
My colt tried to jump a field fence once. It was 4' and apperently he was only good for 3' 9" or so. Got caught in the fence. Really seems for no reason other then to try it. Hasn't tried since tho.

I have always had show jumpers, and they more often than not have fences lower than the heights that they actually jump. However i have never had a horse jump over a fence. There would have to be a very good reason for them to do so.
