Pulling/Thining help!

I have an exmoor x pony and I wanted to thin and pull his mane due to the amount of dead "ginger" mane he had. As it was so long I cut it with scissors to a length and pulled, It hasn't gone exactly to plan the mane parts in the middle and it extremely thick and different lengths. I've started keeping it in plaits to encourage it to stay on one side, but I don't know what to do about the thickness and length. I'm getting a solocomb to pull better than I can, what would be the best way to make it thinner and stay on one side. I am going hunting soon and need his mane either be able to be plaited or stay flat on his side. I will get a decent picture soon as I haven't taken any since I pulled it.

Thank you for your help

The only place you can use scissors on a horses mane is to cut a bridle path.
Use it on the actual mane and you will have a thick mess! The exception the this is if you have a very thin mane and that can be done with a serrated edged knife that does not give the cut effect.
A thick mane that has been cut will, even after it has been pulled, look cut.

I also hate the solo combs, what you will find is that as the cut mane grows so it will flip the longer mane to the wrong side.

I can give you more advice if you post pictures.
