I know this is the horse forum and this is a dog preoblem. But my two dogs seem to get into fights quite often. We have had my dog Lilew for about 4 years now. We rescued her when she was only 4 months old. And this past July my dad found this little border collie/brittany spaniel mix running around and almost getting hit, and he is a major dog lover so he stopped and got out and she just jumped in the car and he took her home and we fell in love with her right away. We called the pervious owners and they said she also escaped and they couldnt keep her, so we kept her and we named her Lolli. But Lilew has always been an alpha dog but she LOVES other dogs, and but Lolli on the other hand likes to go after any dog she can. They have gotten in quite a few fights and the first one Lilew put Lolli in her place and then it was fine for awhile. But now it happens kinda often. Like once a month. And its just getting to the point where I dont know what to do. And its breaking my heart. But whats odd is they seem to love eachother alot and they get along great and then BAM! They just end up getting in a very crazy viscious fight. Neither of them have been seriously hurt only a little cut. But its just not okay. I dont know if I should get rid of Lolli or try maybe some aggression classes? Im so lost. :(
i would not recommend group classes, but have a dog trainer come to your house and work with you individually
good luck =]
Thank you :)
also, make sure you are not treating the original dog any differently. for example, feed that dog first, let him outside first, etc. he is used to being top dog, so make sure you treat him like it.
Oh I treat her just the same as I did :) she is my baby lol.
Dogs will often vie for top position. If yours do it only about once a month you are lucky. It is often more noise than anything. Our large breed male got into a fight with the neighbors large breed dog. From the sounds I expected to see blood but neither had nary a ruffled hair. It was a lot of shouldering and pushing, snarling and snapping. Usually the heavier or faster dog "wins" until the next time.
But the thing is that the last time they fought which was not yesterday but they day before, it was at 5 in the morning and it woke my mom and myself up and my big dog Lilew (who usually wins) has kind of a bad gash on her head. But before that Lolli has mostly been the one who has been hurt she has had a bad cut on her leg. So im just so lost, like is there anything I can do?
You need to get a trainer to come to your house ASAP and work with you and the dogs. Unless you want to keep them separated constantly when you can't watch them.
I would also say that you're not favoring one dog over the other, as this can make things worse. If you watch a pack of dogs (or wolves), the alpha doesn't play favorites.

How much exercise do they get? Are one or both of them fixed? Do you have toys or chews laying out for them? How much obedience training have they gotten? Do they usually fight when humans are around, or just when they're by themselves? Both?
If the newer dog has an issue with dogs generally and not just your other dog, I STRONGLY suggest working with that dog and a good trainer to teach that dog to behave appropriately around all dogs as that will help reduce her reactivity and tendency to fight at home as well.
The worst fights tend to be between two spayed females and two intact males. If they're not getting enough exercise (enough to be TIRED dogs at least 2-3 times a week) or they're not both top notch on obedience even when there are distractions, those are two things you can work on that may help.
They get alot of exercise they both run around and play in the backyard when they are out and come back in the house and they sleep (they are inside dogs and are only outside for a max of 45mins and thats on a nice day) but I do take them on walks when its not to cold outside. They are both fixed females. They have a basket of toys but they dont really like any of the toys. Lilew she had training as a puppy and Lolli I'm not positive but her pervious owner said she had training and I mean they both listen very very well. ANd when they fight is usually when we are home, I have no clue if they fight while we are out, but I dont think they do cause I always find them sleeping on one of the beds in the house and they are always together too.
