Ok so ive always wanted to try bridle-less riding, my grandpa done it and was going to teach me when i became old enough. However, since then my grandpa was diagnosed with congested heart failure and passed away 2 years ago. This year we are putting together a show at my friends barn and i would love to dedicate my open ride to my grandpa but sadly i never got to learn how to do bridle-less riding. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a trustworthy horse so thats nothing to worry about and im an experianced rider. Ive been riding since i was 2-3 yrs old and im 15 going on 16 in 2 months. So ive been riding for awhile
My horse is leg qued by the way. He is getting a refresher as of now being he hasnt been riden in a few months but is dead broke. Not afraid of anything so theres nothing to worry about as far as the horse. Im the one that needs the training on how to get him to do bridle-less riding
I have Clinton Anderson's DVD on training to go bridleless. You start off with a bridle or halter in an arena but something with reins just in case. he uses a training stick to extend his arm but to turn you tap the air first on the left side if you want them to turn right, if they don't turn you tap them gently till they turn their head but if they don't turn then you increase the pressure of taps. You always start off by asking gently, they will eventually learn the cue by you touching the side of their kneck or even with leg pressure.
To stop or back you sit back how you normally would deep in the seat of your saddle and move your legs forward, say whoa and if they don't stop you pick up the reins and gently pull if they don't stop, sounds like your horse knows all that....so it's basically teaching him to stop with your seat/legs.
Good luck! That is something I want to work at with my mare someday!
