Trinity put a great posting on my thread http://www.horseforum.com/hoof-care/...eratex-148874/ about this.

water and good nutrition / diet! ;-) i'm not concerned with cosmetics in that regard and as topical goops dont do anything for hoof health - and can sometimes cause or worsen probs, i dont like to use anything like that.

Has to be treated with care. As I say in the other thread Keratex needs to be used with caution. I was strongly advised against using it on my young tb mare. On some horses, my farrier said, it can harden hoofs, but on horses with naturally thin hoof wall it can make them brittle.

ACV, strong saline or other mild treatments for infection are fine. IMO keratex is not, only on thin walls - thats just how it works n changes the constitution of the keratin. hooves dont tend to need hardening - except when youre talking soft from being waterlogged, but they need to *grow* thicker.particularly on the frogs. pegasus you are right that it can/ does make horn brittle but not

I agree with you about the diet and nutrition!! When I show I prefer not to use the stuff that is black or just plain old dressing, I prefer to use something that is healthy for the feet. My farrier recommends Tuff Stuff for CERTAIN types of feet and to be used ONLY has recommended! But it has done amazing things with horrible feet.
