Horse hair vs. yak hair for mecate reins

Ok, here's the deal. I got a new bit for Xmas. Well it is to narrow for my horses mouth. They are willing to take it back for a refund or a swap. Unfortunately all the mouth peices are the same size. So I may just exchange for some other stuff and wait on a good bit . I was thinking about a nice set of mecate reins. They have horse hair and yak hair on sale. I've never held yak hair though. Don't know if ill like them. Any input?

Mane hair is the desired choice of hair. It is light weight and a bit scratchy which is supposed to teach a horse to move away from it when neck reining. Lesser horse hair reins have a lot of tail hair which doesn't have the same effect. No idea if yak hair would work as well as mane hair. Because mane hair is so light the mecate won't drag on a horse's mouth on one side like the yacht rope ones do if you use it with a snaffle.

I don't think I have ever tried Yak hair, but I do have an Alpaca hair rope that came from Peru. I do not like it because it is too light for the diameter. Not sure how that compares to Yak though.

We traded some cow freight for a couple of Helen Dougal's hair ropes this weekend. And we ordered another from her. (she only makes them in warm weather)They have an awesome feel!
I say stick with the horsehair but it depends on who makes them. I have one I bought off of the internet for my husband because it was the color combo he loves to replace a Schutte that is completely worn out and been retwisted a half dozen times and it feels horrible! All hair ropes are not created equal! LOL

I am deffinately leaning toward the mane hate mecate. I was just curious about the yak hair. Just to see if I was missing out on anything. The mecate I have now isn't a great one. Just one step above a hemp rope. :-) these ropes are a 4 strand twisted off of les Vogt website. The bit I got from him for Christmas is a tad to narrow for my horse. Just trying to figure out what to do about it now. I can get 2 new mecates for the price of the bit I'm returning. Well see.

They won't let you get your money back so you could buy a bit that fits?

Oh, ya. They are being super easy to work with. The problem is most of the solid mouth price bits they have the same size mouth peices. The bit I got was the last bit in that setup they had so the option they have on hand are limited. They actually gave me les's number so I could call him and kinda rack his brain on ideas. So far the customer service has be awesome. Will deffinately do business them in the future.

I may be looking at this bit all wrong. I'm going to call and talk to Mr. Vogt tomorrow. I know I don't want slop in the bit but this just looks to narrow. Maybe I'm wrong.

Ok, so I talked to mr Vogt today about my bit. We talked for about 20 mins. He said to just try dropping the bit down a tad more and see how it looks. He thinks I may have it about a quarter of an inch to high. He said to just ride in it and see how it goes. If it goes good , great. If it does indeed pinch my only option may be to go custom. That's about 400 bucks so let's hope this works. He also said if the ears of the shank or cheek piece is to narrow just get something with some leverage and bend the ears out a bit to fit. He said he ends up doing that with most of his bits at some point. Just get it even. I guess I'm just worrying about things. I should follow my own advise to my wife. Don't worry about s@&t until there is something to worry about.

Hopefully just dropping it a tad will help! Maybe you can post some pics?
I hate to start bending on stuff like that, especially if it's inlayed. I am scared I will pop the silver out if I get carried away.
