I am new to this forum and hope someone can help. I have a Missouri Fox Trotter and a am having a hard time finding a bit that works on her. She is a 9 year old mare. I have tried several different bits and and she constantly shakes her head. She even fights it as soon as it is put in her mouth. I have tied her up and just left them and none seem to work. I have tried a Myler 11335 with a mb 33, mild ported, snaffle, and several others.
Thanks for the responses. I have only had this horse 2 months. We checked her teeth and had her wolf teeth pulled and floated her teeth. This was over 60 days ago. I have placed all these bits on a head stall and let her wear them for most of the day several days and she still shakes her head and wallers it around. When tied up she will rub the bit shank on the tie post.
The bits are 5 inch and fit her good. I had a myler 5 1/2 inch and it was to wide. When I leave the bit in her mouth the is in a very small trap about 30 yards.
Have you tried a french link? She could have a low palate. Also are the mouthpieces thicker? They might not be comfortable in that they are too thick and need a thiner mouth piece.
This mare had not been ridden in 4 years at the previous owners. She is the best looking blue roan mft i have ever seen and i bought her. She was pretty green, but is coming along nicely and has a killer fox trot and flat walk
If she had wolf teeth before you got her I would guess they really wouldn't have been able to have much sucess with a bit. But sometimes horses just don't do well with a bit and need a sidepull or some bitless contraption. But I would try the french link first.
My horse hates face pressure so I don't use anything but a bit so I am no help there. But there are several threads in this section on what people use for bitless and what they like and don't like about different brands and types.
While her teeth were just done? It does not mean that she may not have more teeth problems.
They could have cracked a tooth, adjusted the bite so that she is hurting with the bit, or she could even have cracked the bars in mouth too, at that time, or since then.
Also could have a twig caught in there too, or piece of hay, or thorn?
Saw one with twig stuck straight up into palate.
Could have something else going on, but could also be the metal? Are you coating with anything?
Can you get a picture of what she looks like in bit?
Could also be browband is too small from side to side? Or too close to eyes?
Thanks and will have her mouth checked by vet. I will try to get a picture of her in bride and post it.
Appreciate all the advice
