How far would you search?
I have begun tentatively searching for a horse. It seems like the market near my house (Long Island) has a wonderful selection of amazing horses. The biggest problem is that a lot of those horses are more than I need. I don't need an upper level horse, nor can I afford one! There don't seem to be many horses with my criteria near me.

How far would you search for a horse? How many miles away is realistic?

I like because you can put in your mileage that you want to travel, the temperament of the horse, etc. in your search. I put in 500 miles because the shorter distances never turned up something I got excited about. Personal preference I guess but how far would you be willing to travel for your heart horse?

My friend is looking in CT also having trouble finding a good horse for under mega bucks. I'd say expand your search, line up a few showings and take a trip. My friend is finding a lot of possibles in VA.

I drove almost 300 miles to get my mare, she turned out great and I don't think I could've found better for the price any closer.
Its mostly up to whether you like to drive or not.. haha.
Good luck!

Thankfully I have a new Prius..I better start preparing for long car rides.

But then I'll need to figure out trailering..

I'm the one that used to re-school Widowmakers and find them good trail riding homes.

That means, if I were looking, I can find a plethora of needy horses to bring home, in my own county. My only concerns would be conformation and health issues that would go beyond needing some groceries.

The more restrictive the needs of the Buyer are, most likely the further the search will have to be extended:-)

Three of my four horses were purchased within 45 miles of home. The fourth horse was 92 miles away but, I was very well acquainted with the Seller who did a stellar job of conning me into buying the horse:-P:lol:

My best friends husband is a professional horse hauler. I look all over the US as he can check them out before he ever loads them :)

I got Daisy, she lived 600 miles away... luckily her old owner was hauling horses this way and I paid extra for gas... had to haul an hour to get her but happy to do so... got a very nice horse for much less than the similar horses in my area are going for...

We usually stay within a 2 hr drive. Over that and it seriously adds to the overall cost. Luckily there are TONS of good horses very close to us for respectable prices. But for the right horse nothing would be too far if I could justify the cost.

I looked up to 3 hours away, because that's what worked for me. When the kids left for school, hustle them out the door, get in the car, drive 3 hours. See horse for one hour, drive back and be here as they are getting out of school.

Of course I ended up buying my horse 15 mins from me, and the ones I drove hours to see were duds.
