- - Cold bit

I've never liked the thought of putting a cold bit in a horses' mouth but I knew it had to be done and I figured it'd warm up in a moment. I had a loose-ring snaffle bit charm keychain thingy and it had been out on my purse in the garage all night and it was freezing. I'm weird so I decided to put it in my mouth to see how cold it really is and IT WAS FREEZING! So. Cold. And it didn't warm up! I don't own a horse but I know some really sweet, old therapy horses and I want the best for them cuz they are doing such a boring yet helpful job but they don't have a bit warmer (i.e the Bit Blanket). And they aren't mine so its not like I can go buy one for them!! So how do you warm up a bit? How long does it take? Most of the horses just had loose ring D-ring snaffle bits but one has a curb chain and I imagine that is cold, too! How long and how do you warm up a bit?

You could keep the bits indoors, buy a bit warmer or soak them in warm water for a few minutes. You could keep them covered up, or put them in a pocket for a little while. There's a ton of ways to warm up a bit. Soaking in warm water is probably the easiest but make sure after you soak the bit that its not burning hot - touch it afterwards to test the temp.

You don't have to have an electric bit warmer to warm up the bits. There are microwaveable ones out there that hold their heat for a long time, so you can even microwave them at home and then drive out to the barn and they still do the trick when you get there.
There's a HF member who sells them for a pretty reasonable price: http://www.horseforum.com/tack-equip...s-hand-102485/

The Bit warmers that Rebecca makes are great! My horse and I both LOVE it :)

If you want, I could make you a fleece bit warmer. I've been meaning to start a thread in the for sale section. I made them for all of the boarders at my barn and sti have the materials to make more. If you're interested, PM me. I can send pictures of what they look like too.

I second it. Got it last Nov and very happy. In past I just warmed it in my hands while breathing on it.
