Is Luca black or brown?

Some of you might now about Luca, the gelding I got for free when he was 5 years old. Well, I have been wondering...

In Luca's sale ad, it stated that he was black.however when I posted some pics on the HF, some members told me he was brown. Now, the farrier (who's also a horse owner) told me that Luca is actually a genuine black horse and that he's quite rare! Who should I believe??? Here is Luca.

This is him right now:

He is lighter around some points and his mane is sun bleached, it was pure black in winter.

This is Luca about a month ago, when he still has a little bit of winter fluff on his back:

And as you can see here ^^^^, Luca's muzzle was lighter. (and he was skinnier because I didn't have him for that long yet and he was even worse when I got him :( )

Here he is when it's winter. He looked like a bay/brown to me:

Poor Luca :-( It was heartbreaking to see him so skinny. But he had spirit. And that kept him going! :-)

Now here's the pic that makes me think that Luca is indeed brown:

He still had the tiniest bit of winter coat there...but still.
IS LUCA BROWN.....OR TRUE/FADING BLACK?

My guess is that he's either brown or fading black because he looks like he is definitely NOT a true black horse. The farrier thinks fading black because his legs are pure black right now. Umm....aren't they black in brown horses too? I don't know...What do you think???

I'm going with bay.

He's a brown that is really, really prone to sunfading by the looks of him.

In this picture you can see the lightening around his muzzle and barely see it around his eye -

Brown without a doubt. He doesnt look like a black in any of the photos

I'm going to agree with brown. If he were black he'd actually look black at some point in the year (when a new coat grew in, before it had a chance to fade). I can understand the mix up in his summer coat, since he's still quite dark but loses a lot of the "mealy"ness around his eyes/muzzle.

You're right that the legs aren't a good way to tell- they could be pure black in a bunch of non-black horse colors.

Brown for sure.

The way I, personally, tell if a horse is brown or not is of they change color with the seasons. One of my best friends has a black quarab gelding. He is always black, whether outside, inside, winter or summer. My best friend has what we thought was a dark bay Arab gelding, but it has since been determined that he is indeed brown. He's never the same color two seasons in a row. Add to that that his soft points (armpit, inner thigh, etc) are lighter than the rest of him and you have a brown horse.

Brown!!!!

I would say brown, here is my fading black, in the summer and the winter, she doesn't look brown at all. Some horses do change a lot, but mine didn't. Look at the difference between your brown and my black:
