Fox Trotter- what do you think?
This is my nieces gelding, he is 100% Missouri Fox Trotter. For his breed is his conformation good. Also if anyone is a Fox Trotter fanatic, and info on their breed and gait would be appreciated. He is 8yrs old, 15hh, and 900#.
Conformation should typically be judged the same for any breed, although some have certain "quirks" in their conformation that is common to a particular breed (EX: thoroughbreds tend to be high in the wither and standardbreds tend to be sickle-hocked)
As far as your guy goes, his shoulder is too upright
Knowing this, his neck still doesnt seem to be set too badly
Appears ever-so-slightly over at the knee in that photo, though more pics would help to rule that out
Nice short back
Very sharp slope to the croup and hindquarters are very lean
Appears slightly sickle-hocked
Again, more photos would help the judgement
Here are some older pics, i have some more waiting to download.
These two are a couple days old.
Yes, those pics are better, even though he's muddy lol
Shoulder is still a bit upright but he has plenty of depth through the girth and nolonger looks over at the knee, which is a good thing ;)
Again, back is a good length and his hindquarters dont look too bad in those last photos either.
I still think he is a tad sickle-hocked but not a badly conformed horse all around
This horse has very poor angles behind. The peak of croup is set too far back and the coupling is stiff appearing as well as a bit long. The angle at the stifle is poor and the hocks are over straight plus having a set to them so he is camped under and will be prone to curbs. He also appears to be bow legged behind.
His bone is adequate but his point of shoulder is extremely low so that the angle of the humerus from point of shoulder to elbow lays nearly flat and the shoulder itself is very steep. He has a bit of a low pigeon breast as a result.
The base of his neck is set low and his neck is also tied in low ahead of his withers. He has adequate height of withers. He is built quite level (due mostly to the set in his hocks) and he is a bit hammer headed.
