Microchips how efficient are they??
I want to hear everyone's intake on this. Both my horses are chipped but I really do question how efficient they are. Horses are supposed to get scanned before they are taken thru the shoots, but really does it happen? do those chips serve any other purpose? do any of you have some stories regarding them?

Let's hear them.

woah! i've never heard of horses with microchips...interesting..

do they work like they do with dogs? where if they get lost, you just call it in and they can find it?

that sounds ore like a low jack for thought about chipping both star and abby...BUT....most vet's and sale barns do not check for chips at all in my area

My boys are chipped. After the EI went through the Sydney area I needed to have blood tests done to say they had been infected and now clear of the EI and that information along with the rest of their history is put onto the records and certificates. Also my details incase something happens and proof of ownership. I don't know if I really needed it done but it was cheap to have it done incase clubs decide that proof of the horses medical history are needed.

It was implanted about half way up their necks and has never been any problems. I can't even feel it in there.

all my horses are micro chipped. ever since the EI outbreak all horses had to be chipped at the same time as they were vaccinated. all horses are supposed to be scanned at events now from what ive heard but we havent been scanned yet. we have had to show our papers though but no scanning

We had to show our certificates at shows with entries but as of this month we haven't had to. I don't know about the microchips being compulsory though?? At least in NSW.

I think it's a great idea. I haven't heard much about it in my area for horses but we had our dog and cats done. I think it would only work if it became common place so that a vet or an auction house may scan for it.

I think it's neat to know that the horse are chipped as well but I honestly have yet to see if they are ever going to be actually used for something :) I guess time will tell but as of now...they are implanted for decoration.

up here we had no choice ;)

m2g - i cant see them being used for identification unless one of my horses were stolen. then if they scan it has all my details. other than that its just a proof of vaccination really

Interesting about showing. I'm not sure if any of the shows here would scan the chips for one reason or another. I know when we had the breakout of west nile nothing was added to the chips to identify the horses that received vaccines.
