Get a donkey to wear a blanket? Hi, My three year old miniature donkey will not let anyone put a blanket on her. I would like her to wear a blanket since she lives outside 24/7 and we live where it gets really cold in the winter. Do y'all have any tips on desensitizing her to the blanket and getting her to wear one? Thanks! |
LOL, if she has managed to this age maybe she doesn't need a blanket? Where do you live, and more importantly, where are the pics? Sorry I can't be any actual help, I got my first Donkey, who is happily living outside 24/7 in -30*C temps, with no issue, back in the fall. I haven't yet tried to make him do anything he doesn't want to, so I have no clue about Donkey training. |

This is her(: It's alright, thanks! |
Donkeys are fine in cold what they cannot take is constant wet. Their coats are different to horses and not waterproof. Horses will ignore a shelter in the wet - a donkey will head for cover in the wet. |
Donkey training is more of a discussion, less of a demand. The donkey has to want to do it -- has to have motivation as to "why should I?" Loving/praise are the best I found, but treats can work. Aside from that -- I don't see why your donkey would need a blanket. We too had one that lived outside with a shelter available 24/7 in Ontario. Winters are -30 celcius plus a wind. The donkey would just grow a phenomal coat and be fine. Also, from the pic, I would guess that your donkey is a tad, just a tad, overweight so that will help keep him warm. |
Thanks guys! (: Quote:

I have a soft spot for donkeys! :) How cold is cold? As long as their coats aren't caked they should be fine. Ours do well, even in the teens. They also have a shelter. If you would like to get them in blankets maybe start with getting them used to a large towel all over their bodies and resting on them. Then move to the blanket. Also, air out the blankets so they don't small scary! Posted via Mobile Device |

All I can say is, when I die if I come back as a donkey - please let it be really far south of Northern Ontario. I sure hope the cute little guy accepts his blankey! :) |
