Draft (cross) and large horse owners-Question about boots
In a few weeks, I'm going to be putting Aires back to work and taking lessons. Hopefully we can be ready for the local schooling show series that two ranches (including the one I now board at) host during the summer. I'm wanting to get SMBs or Classic Equine Legacy boots for Aires because the footing in the arena at out new barn is much harder than that at our old barn. My concern is sizing, though.

Aires will be 4 in May and stands 16.1hh and weighs around 1500-1600lbs. Last time I measured his cannons, they were 11" and his fetlocks are even bigger...and he wasn't quite 3 at the time (he was about 15.3hh and 1400lbs or so).

I haven't been able to find any sizing info online about SMBs or Legacy boots, but I'm on my phone and half the websites that would probably have that info are ones my phone won't load.

So, what size would he be (in either brand)? Do they make more draft size SMBs/Legacy boots? He seriously has legs like fence posts and they're even worse in winter with how hairy he gets.

SMB's run larger than CE's so I would go with that brand. I will look up sizing here in a minute.

See the fit information below to select the appropriate size for your horse. As a general rule when fitting SMBŪ II boots, a horse will require one size larger on the hind legs than the front, unless there is no pronounced size difference in the fetlocks.
XSmall: 9” (20.32cm) fetlock circumference, 9.25” (23.50cm) boot height, up to 14 hands
Small: 10” (25.40cm) fetlock circumference, 10.25” (26.04cm) boot height, 14-15 hands
Medium: 12” (30.48cm) fetlock circumference, 11” (27.94cm) boot height, 15-16.2 hands
Large: 13” (33.02cm) fetlock circumference, 11.75” (29.85cm) boot height, 16.3-17.2 hands
XLarge: 14” (35.56cm) fetlock circumference, 14” (35.56cm) boot height, 17.2 hands and up

Edit again: This is the largest CE's go in cannon bone measurement. Each brand is measured differently.
Large 8-1/4” - 8-3/4”

Ok, so thought of another related question...

Aires is a hairy beast in the winter and grows some decent "feathers" this time of year. He won't start shedding out until at least March or April. Should I go ahead and measure him for boots now, knowing that there's a little bit of play in the boot fit (going down in size)?

How much does the hair add do you think? I would think the extra fur would make them hotter inside. I'm not one for that extra fluff so I would just shave it lol. But otherwise I really am not sure. If it changes the size you order (adding another inch to it) then I would consider buying the one that would fit the most out of the year and possibly just trim the fur when it's longer.

His hairiness adds about another inch to the measurement. He apparently thinks we live in Antarctica instead of northern Arizona. He grows a 4" outer coat every year and doesn't shed until late.

Shaving would be great, but he absolutely will not tolerate the clippers. We've tried desensitizing him for the two years I've had him with zero luck. He rears and paws at you when you try to get close with them, even though he gets his butt worked every time he puts a toenail out of line. I guess I could scissors his feathers, though.

Yeap, scissors works just fine. I've done that. Looks a little messier but then again I'm not the best at that lol.
