Pro Horse Slaughter- Can you tell me why?
First, I want to clear things up: I'm not against horse slaughter. I'm neutral on the subject. The only thing that bugs me about slaughter of ANY animal is unnecessary cruelty, which needs to be addressed. I believe horse slaughter has its place.
But one thing I've noticed, both on this forum and other places, is when someone comes in who's against it, and they get roundly attacked. What puzzles me is that most of the attackers are horse owners/lovers who consider horses "pets", more or less.
If someone suggested slaughtering our pet dogs and cats, there would be an uproar of protest, especially amongst pet owners. Yet so many horse owners seem to be in favor of horse slaughter. I'm scratching my head over that one.
Again, I'm not against it myself. I'm just trying to figure out why so many "horse lovers" are all for it. Enlighten me, please!
Because there are worse fates than being sent to a slaughter yard.
I don't think they really get "attacked" so much as everyone tried to explain why horse slaughter is a necessity, and because it's so many people it can come off as rather hostile. you say that we aren't slaughtering dogs and cats.. Well, yes, we are. Shelters kill hundreds of dogs and cats across the country every day. If a person can't keep their dog, and nobody will buy it, their only option is to bring it to a shelter where it could likely get put down. Similarly, if someone can't keep their horse and nobody will buy it, they've no choice but to send it to slaughter auctions.
It is awful. But if we didn't slaughter animals - horses, cats, dogs - there would be SO many animals in awful homes being neglected because they can't be taken care of and fed. Unnecessary cruelty should certainly be addressed (and here I'm not referring to the way they kill the horses - that can't be helped, but I'm referring to how they are treated before slaughter) but overall I don't think members here try to attack them.
Sometimes people do get sick of someone coming along with a "OMG horse slaughter is so mean it should be banned, they beat the horses, etc etc" kind of post, because that person has obviously not done any research about it. In those situations, I do agree we may come off as a bit snappy... But I don't think anybody is intentionally trying to attack any body.
What difference does it make if bodies rot, are buried, are incinerated or eaten?
Horse slaughter allows animals to be disposed of that might otherwise suffer.
Sad but true.
Some cultures DO eat cats and dogs, so although I consider them pets other than entrees, that doesn't make my opinion more valid than someone elses who sees them as food.
I eat meat and use/wear leather products, so how can I be against using horses for meat? Horses are no more deserving or special than any other livestock except in the minds of those who own them.
It's one way to use the protein from a livestock animal. Just because it's not something I ever personally plan to do, doesn't mean it gives me the right to dictate to others what they can or can't do.
If I want the freedom to do with my animals as I please, then others are to be accorded the same freedom.
foolishness to pick and choose one animal over another, Anti slaughter people tend to get jumped on because they are hypocrites.
Boo hooo horse slaughter is so bad,,, oh and um can you pass me another slice of bacon ?
Couldn't have said it better Clava and everyone else. People aren't attacked, the ones who seem like they are usually are the ones getting on others about being pro-slaughter. They seem to think "us" pro-slaughter people are heartless human beings. You have to look at the logistics here. The are indeed much more HORRIBLE and WORSE fates than being shipped to slaughter and being put out of misery or into worse hands.
