Our first session for the year
Mana and I had our first session of ground driving this year. It went absolutely great considering the last time he did this was when he first learned it almost a year ago and I am just plain inept at it in the first place.

I am on the look out for a surcingle that has some lower rings on there, but this is what I have to work with for now.

Luckily I had friends around that helped by taking pictures for me. I have few pics of my horses and myself, so I very much appreciate them as well as it helps me to see where I need improvement. I am not so much worried about being perfect with this session as it was mostly just to see if he was going to have a meltdown and to gauge what he remembers so I know where to start.

He was lovely 99% of the time. I made the mistake of not having my whip with me for those "I don't know about this, maybe I'll just ignore your forward cue" moments but the end of my driving lines worked well enough. Won't do that again.

Can't wait to have him home with me again. The hour drive to see him is tough, but the barn owner is a great lady and Mana gets spoiled with treats while I'm not there. Hopefully I can have him ten minutes from me again by Feb. but we'll see. If I do, then I'll have miles and miles of trails to walk (and hopefully later this year, ride) Mana on right up the road.

Fingers crossed that everything works out.

He sees another boarder's horse out and got all distracted. She doesn't like him at all, but he tries so hard to be friends. LOL. Poor guy.

One of those "I'm going to pretend I didn't hear you cluck" moments.

Back on track!

"You're trying to take a nice picture? Let me help by moving at the last second."

"I was just trying to help!" *Grumpy face*

Finally, almost done. Don't mind the suspicious look on my face. I was waiting for him to move again at the last second. :-P

All done!

LOL, love it. especially the 3rd to last picture. Nice work! are you ground driving for fun or are you going to drive her? what's wrong with your surcingle now?

Thanks! Right now I am ground driving to teach him steering before I start riding him. I've hopped on him for fun before, but never really asked for much. Basically just went along the trail. This year I am planning to really start riding him, so I am going from ground up again to get him going right.

I am hoping to get him trained to cart at some point, but right now he is more useful to me as a riding horse.
My surcingle now is fine, but I would like in the beginning to have some rings that are a little lower and work our way up as he progresses. However, I think this'll be fine if I can't find anything.

Very cool!
I've been working my filly with ground driving she just just hitched the other day.
He looks like a real sweet heart!

THIS expression is one I am very familiar with. ARABS.

He's growing up so nice! What a sweetie. :)

Thanks HLL! He's a keeper!

Wallaby, RIGHT?! I swear, they must teach this look at birth or something. And thanks. He's becoming a real fine guy. Can't wait to see him at five. He's mostly done growing 'up' (unless he is going to beat both Mom and Dad and try for the 15hh range?) and should start filling out.

I must admit, there have been a lot of sleepless nights after tough days working with him that I wondered if I was the right person for him, but he's really coming together. I can really see where the things I've done with him are coming through at this point in his training and it is very rewarding.

Although, I still never want another foal of my own after this!! LOL
