Strange Heels?

My father in law has been teaching me to trim my horses hooves. I've trimmed them with him there several times an done well. My horses hooves where past due a trim an my father in law hasn't been available. I trimmed him how he showed me but didn't do as well. There seemed to be extra tissue in the area of the bars and looked as if his hoof didn't end as far back as it should. It wasn't exactly hoof but wasn't exactly frog or sole either. The hoof didn't have that defined v shape where hoof wall meets bars. I cut a little away it seemed like calus. The hoof looked correct when he was standing an he seemed happy to have it done. I've looked a lots of pictures of hooves but nothing similar. Any ideas? It really looks like I should cut it away but when in question I didn't.

Went back out there this morning an took my time inspecting the hoof. The heel had become a bit overgrown at the butress. I used the rasp to cut it down more in line with the toe. Looks much better. Still not perfect but way better. Bad thing was I mis judged the back of the hoof an took just a bit much off the quarters. I'm going to give it a week an use the rasp to take off a little more heel until it all uniform again. Not picking the hoof up it looks perfect. Just not as smooth a finish as I'd like.

Hi Josh,

While your FIL has given you some prac lessons, it sounds like you may have little understanding of the anatomy & function, therefore the principles that govern when/why you do something & how far... & when why not to. I would suggest you do your theory homework before just getting stuck in.

As Walkin suggested, if you want any specific advice, you need to provide pics to start with. Check out link in signature below for what's needed. Also info on diet, environment, work, etc is helpful.
