Im Doing The Right Thing Right?

Im selling my mare Indi, she was my first horse. Iv been barrel racing for years now and she was a present towards me. I love her to death much more than any other horse, but she hates being in the arena, she hates doing the barrel pattern and being in her stall.

She loves being out on the trail though, she acts good and relaxs. When we're in the arena she's constantly throwing her head, no matter how tight i put the tie-down on her. She tosses her head so bad she's almsot fallen over multiple times while we we're riding but she only does it when we canter, because she wants to run when i hold her back is when she flings her head.

A friend of ours has a really nice little gelding he's willing to trade for her, he said he'll work with her and find her a really good home. but im gonna miss her so much am I really doing the right thing?

That is her

Well, it sounds like she's "blown" from the barrel racing stand point. She is definately telling you she doesn't want to do that anymore. I'm curious, could you not try trail riding on her yourself? She seems to enjoy that. Or is Barrelracing all you do? Why does this guy want to trade his gelding? I would be leary of a trade. Sometimes your just trading bad for worse. I would want to know about his gelding.

I agree.
Is he looking solely for a trail horse? I think the horse needs a break, not retraining. She is showing signs that to me indicate she wants a bit of a retirement from the barrels. It doesn't necessarily have to be a permanent retirement, but nonetheless, a break from the arena.

She's never done barrels thats why my parents bought her for me, so I can train her to do them. But its just not working she hates the arena. I would love to do trails on her but my passion is barrels and my and my parents dont have the money to keep Zippo,Ransom, and Indi and A horse i can do barrels on. I also rarely have the time to be doing a trail ride as much as she would need to.

He's an old friend of ours who is trading the gelding. I know the gelding very well seeing as i go to this guys place alot, and the gelding has alot of trail and barrel potential. And he's a total sweet heart and always has been everytime I see him. But if you need here is his info

He's a 10yro QH gelding, he does have papers. I wouldnt be able to straight across trade him for Indi because he has alot of training id also have to give him money for the gelding who's name is Sox, but I want to change the name to something alittle less original. But here's his pictures that I took last time I saw him

aww thats so sad. I think you really should try a little harder maybe she just needs a little time and work.

I mean i wouldn't ever give Junior up and he can't do much i would rather have him than have a horse just for barrels. I lover Junior but just because he has knee problems and can't do barrels, poles, go extremely fast, do quick turns and has problems doing some fun activities does not mean i would give him up. Yeah i would like to do those things but he is my buddy. I love him to death.

If you really want to though go right ahead and get that gelding but its just an opinion. Horses have feelings too and you could be giving up a great buddy. Even your best friend.

believe me iv been trying she jsut wont do them or arena work.

but Good news a friend of mine who lives about a 5min walk from my boarding stables wanted her so I sold her to my friend. Now Indi lives in a huge paddock with a covered area three times the size of a normal stall at my ranch :)

Jr_lover 04-15-2007 08:54 PM

oh....wow you just sold her. Well i guess you do whatever you can and i guess i kinda see how you would rather her be happy.

Barrel Racing Lette 04-17-2007 10:40 AM

its fine thoguh because I can walk everyday and see her. i have permission to go in and play and ride her whenever I want and she's right there.

I visited her yesterday she is really happy right, and the woman who now owns her also got a pony, and the pony follows Indi everywhere its cute

i no that its hard to let go,but if it makes her happy, u should be happy. just trust your friend that he'll find her a good home and know that wherever she goes she will be loved, of course she'll always love you, and that she can gallop on the trails like she wanted. its hard, and i would be sad if i was in ur position, but it is the right thing to do.
