Dandruff - help?
Hey guys,
I noticed the other day how bad my horses dandruff has gotten. He didn't have bad dandruff like this over the summer, but it makes it very difficult for me, as I'm allergic to horses and the dandruff is what really causes me to have a bad reaction. Since it's the middle of winter, bathing him really isn't an option. I've read that feeding corn/vegtable oil helps sometimes. Anyone know about this?

Yep, I have found that a horse's diet can really impact whether or not they have dandruff. Flax seed is one of the most popular feed additives for this, though Black Oil Sunflower Seeds are also effective. I think canola oil would work too, but it's definitely more messy. It is also very important to make sure that your horse is getting all of the vitamins and minerals he needs however, as this can also impact skin condition.

My mustang had dandruff when I first got him, but once I was able to convince him that feed was yummy I was able to add a complete vitamin/mineral ration balancer and black oil sunflower seeds to his diet. It worked wonderfully... but probably took at least 2-3 months for everything to clear up.

help on dandruff
i also agree, when adding more oils and fats to a horses diet, it will help provide the horses COAT with the natural oils that it needs to reduce dandruff. of course you would need to fee your horse these things in moderation, but over time it should help alot:) try maybe some oil in some oats with a little molasses mixed in, to help your horse with the taste!

My horse also sufferes from dandruff, and one thing i have found that will simply remove the dandruff on the spot, is spraying the area with show sheen (or any coat spray ) then letting it sit for a minute. THEN taking a soft dandy brush and running it over the sprayed area:) it removes the dandruff pretty well for me!

I just started feeding him some supplements, as he's been having a hard winter. I've never needed to supplement him before, but this winter has been very hard on him. I think I'll give him a bit of time and see if those help, if not I'll look into the oils.:)
