howd you get started riding
this is the thread to share how you got started in riding and how old you were.
I've been riding occasional trail rides since my early 20s but didn't get an opportunity to get serious until a couple years ago when my Pastor's daughter got into barrel racing and they learned my passion & goal to soon own a horse. One day my Pastor showed up in front of my house with a horse, and so my real journey began. A couple years later here I am... I've found a good trainer and have been taking lessons and soaking up everything I can get my hands on about horsemanship :)
Well, I've always ridden. My mom loves horses, always has, so every chance she got she would hire a pony to give pony rides on our birthdays until we were old enough for lessons and stuff. She really, really wanted to share her passion, lol.
Eventually, she got a couple of arabians from a breeder friend, although I was too young to do much. I just remember her pointing out a little foal under some trees and running like hell from a couple of giant dogs that the lady had, lol. I'm not sure if she just worked with them, or if she actually owned them, or even how many she had, though, I was way too little. Maybe 3 or 4.
I started taking lessons when I was 6 or 7, after we moved to Tucson, Arizona, and we bought horses soon after that. I've had my own horses since I was 8. So yeah, I've always been around horses, and was riding as soon as I a.) was big enough and b.) was sure they weren't going to eat me.
Actually one drug, Zyrtec (if I remember the spelling). It's an allergy medication, and about 3 years ago my doctor prescribed it for me, without mentioning that it has an unfortunate side effect in some people: it makes you stupid. (Seriously, before finding this out I also wasted a semester of my PhD research program.)
So I have this friend who's very into horses, and she'd been bugging me to get a horse, said she knew of a really nice mare that was free to a good home. Pre-Zyrtec, I could resist. Post-Zyrtec, it was "OK, let's go get her."
Then there were two years of hoof problems, serious leg injury, big vet bills, a year of walking/trotting with her (on foot, not riding) for rehab...
Sitting in the saddle in front of my mother...before I could walk.
My grandparents bought a pony for me when I was 5 and it lived at their farm. I was there a lot. I retired last fall. I don't think I have changed much from that 5 year old, but hopefully I have gotten a bit smarter. : )
I suppose the beginning of my riding career can be summed up by one picture. I was 5 months old at the time....
I was 6-7 years old, and moved from the city to a small town with population of no more then 300 people. There was a local 4-H club and my sister and I loved to go and watch. They has a light horse club, and a halter group. The halter group members dealt with 4-10 month old foals, halter breaking them, and teaching them to lead, pick up their feet, and be touched all over.
Anyways, my sister and I joined the halter club, and I got put with a 5 month old Norwiegian Fjord colt named Gunner. After about a month, I was the only one who could do anything with him. He was my little buddy, but unfortunatly, I could not use him the next year, because he had died (he was runty)
A lot of people were asking me if I wanted to ride one of their horses for 4-H, and finally I came across an appaloosa named Lucky. He was old, swayed back, and ugly looking, but I fell in love with his personallity, and rode him for 3 years in 4-H, and in a horse show, but again, unfortunatly I was not able to carry on with him because he died of a heart attack (he slipped in the winter, and got tangled up in a barbed wire fence during the night, we figure while he was trying to get up, he had a heart attack)
I got another offer to ride someones horse for the next 4-H year, and I ended up riding another appy (solid brown) named Fudgy, he was 16hh big sweetheart. He was about 7 years old and listened to all my commands.
4-H got less and less people as that year rolled on, and eventually there was no more 4-H. So... I started to go to camp, I would go to camp every year for about 3 years, each camp was mainly on horses.
I got put on many different horses and had many falls. A lot of the falls took place over at my friends house, whom I would go over to every weekend for 5 years (all while 4-H was happening)
I have been on horses who would take me through fences, ditch me when I would hit a pole that only the horse could fit under, not a rider too, and horses that would buck me off just for the fun of it.
In september 2012 I finally got my own horse. A 2 year old filly that I can now train and break myself.
I am now training her, and we have come a long ways. All thanks to the horses I have ridden, and the people who have helped and instucted me.
Six and half years ago, my wife wanted to go "look" at a horse. That's where it started. Now, we've got 8 horses.
I did some riding when I was younger. That was many years ago. Riding at a summer camp and a few paid trail rides. Nothing real serious.
When I agreed to go look at the horse, I knew we were going to be new horse owners. He was suppose to be broke to ride but we found out he was barely even started. I took that first year to learn as much as I could about horses. Experiment, trail and error, I taught myself to ride. No lessons except the horses teaching me.

My mother's friend put me on a miniature horse and led me around by lead rope for a couple if minutes when I was about 1. i have drawings of when I was two and I wanted to be a horseback rider. I drew the drawing and my mom wrote what I told her. Basically, It's a drawing with two lines sticking out from a circle (I think that may be the
person) and the circle is half black ( which was probably the helmet). Haha. Ever since then I begged my mom for horseback riding lessons and my wish was granted when I turned 7. :)
