Counter canter

My horse can canter on the left lead while going to the right and it feels very balanced, but when he goes on the right lead to the left and it feels very off and rough, and he wants to switch leads. How can I get this way smoother?

Be patient, improve the true canter and start the counter canter by riding shallow loops beginning at no more than 5m off the track and gradually steepening until you are riding a 3 loop serpentine.

Will it just improve by doing it more? Why is one way fine and the other's not?

Horses--just like people--tend to be "better" on one side then the other. :) Barring any issues (a chiropractic adjustment might help your horse), he likely just needs to strengthen his "bad" side. IMHO.

Yes the more you do it the better it should come. Just do a little more work on the bad side.
