Learning to Rope and have a question
Okay this may sound like a silly question but Im wondering how I can attach my rope to my saddle without having to have it over the saddle horn for when Im just riding.
I have to say I have gained a new respect for roping after working towards learning it.
From the ground not so hard but actually riding and roping is proving far more difficult than I though it would be lol.
Any help would be appreciated on the above.
There are a few ways to do it. First is if you have a rope holder on your saddle that is the easiest. You just wrap a few wraps around the rope then it has a loop you throw over the horn. My bf uses a piece of rubber. Wraps it around the rope and over the horn. I told him it was a good way to get dragged...
Third way is not as good, but I use it on my one roper that doesn't have a rope holder. Take the saddle strings, tie it up that way then depending how it hangs you can either let it sit there or hang it on the saddle horn to get it higher up. I have seen guys that have tied it somehow to the back of the saddle somehow. I have no idea how to do this properly.
id say that sounds like a good way to get dragged.
Guess I should of specified. The rope holders are leather. They break quite easily.
The folks that keep their ropes on the back of the saddle are either using their saddle strings, or a loop under the concho to hold the rope/ropestrap.
Also, since you mentioned having some difficulty with roping from the horse, a good way to transition from practicing on the ground to in the saddle is to start at a walk and do circles around a barrel(or something else like that to use as a center point), and start swinging your rope while keeping a good symmetrical circle around the barrel. Once you can control your horse and your rope doing this, move up to the trot and then the lope. After being able to fully control your swing and keep your horse in a good circle at the lope around 1 barrel, start doing it in a figure 8 around two barrels. This drill will give you a good starting point of rope and horse control prior to actually chasing cows.
awesome thanks for the advice. I am getting much more accurate on the ground now and not too bad just sitting on my horse and throwing but I couldn't figure how I would learn the walk, trot and lope thing without having a cow which I don't have available to me.
haha, well, that's how to get better from the horse...once you get that down, let me know and I'll let you know when we are roping and you can come on down to the house here in angelo and we can put you on some cows...also, our local Cowboy Church is going to have a Friday jackpot roping starting on 1 Mar..
that will be great. I will be working on it and will let ya know when I get profecient enough.
