help on Hoof concerns please?
1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to go look at that wonderful Shire/Paint cross tomorrow and I'm pretty sure she is going to be mine. My only concern from talking to her owner, is her feet. Shire Sport Horse

is her link for the pics of her, but these are her feet blown up from one of the shots.

need a practiced eye to critique please? what concerns should I look for tomorrow? Supposedly she is okay for the owner to handle hooves, but didn't like the farrier, and that's why they look like that.

I would probably be hesitant if looking to buy her. Do you see how she is parked out in every single photo? It might just be a coincidence, or she may be really hurting with those feet. "Not liking a farrier" is no excuse for not getting her feet trimmed. There's chutes, sedation, a lot of quick fixers that could have prevented the condition her feet are in. Not only are her feet falling apart, but with the bad angle on her hooves a lot of stress is being put on her tendons.

hmm, can't say I had noticed her standing oddly at all. I know how hard it can be to get decent shots of your horse if you're not great with a camera, having had to do it myself. I will definitely watch her for any tenderness/ problems. The other photos they (the hooves) look better.

What specifically should I look for when I see her? Keep in mind, she will not be put to use right away, and will have the time she needs to be shod/trimmed correctly and be comfortable with it. She's been saddled a few times, and had someone on her back once. So I consider her untrained as far as that goes, she'll be 3 in March.

If you're really interested in buying her, get a PPE done. Get some radiographs of her feet. The radiographs can give you an idea if her coffin bones are rotating, the thickness of her hoof wall and sole, and the overall condition of her feet. It cost me around 100 bucks to get all four feet radiographed on my colt, and I'm sure glad I did. His feet are in horrible condition due to a bad trim. If his feet were on a grown horse, the horse would have already foundered. The feet make the horse, so if you're really interested in buying her I wouldn't skimp on checking their condition.

Can anyone recommend a farrier in the Dallas area that might be willing to go look at her with me or for me?

I did not notice her standing like she was sore.
I thought she looked nice even with the neglected feet.
Like you asked in your third post, I would try and find a farrier to look at her for you.

Like others said, bring a farrier with you. No foot No horse.
She may not want to stand for a farrier because her feet hurt.

If there is no tenderness in her feet then they might just need some tlc, i got a horse with hooves like that who was badly abused and so i trimmed his feet and worked with him, he didnt like having his feet worked on at first but after a month they looked great and he didnt mind them being touched at all. Then his former owners came and got him when i wasnt home saying that they didnt 'give' him to me they just needed a place for him to stay :( all that work for nothing.
