Grr!!! Dog owner / breeding rant
Ok, so I've been doing dog rescue for a good while now. It's my big thing I guess. I just can't get past the fact that we kill 3-4 million pets a year because there aren't homes for them, but some Joe Blow wants to toss together a couple similar looking dogs in his back yard so he can make a buck off them, with no thought of the consequnces.

Anyway, everyone at work knows I do rescue. I've been lucky enough to adopt out a couple dogs through work. Right now the only thing I have is a beagle / basset mix. After hubby's last heart attack we but way back - had to give up chickens and the horses and everything. Trying to simplify his life.

Anyway, a co-worker calls me just a minute ago and asks what kind of dogs I have. I wasn't sure if he meant for adoption or that I personally own. So I started going through the list of dogs I own; rottweilers (my first love), rat terrier, cocker spaniels, chihuahuas, and an beagle / basset mix available for adoption.

He says good because his son owned a little chihuahua poodle mix for the last couple years that was really a great little dog, but his son was leaving the house this morning and backed over him, killing him instantly. They're heart broken because they'd planned to breed him.

Ok, so already I'm irritated. Don't get me wrong - dogs get out. Running it over could have totally been an accident that wasn't preventable. I know ours have slipped past us occasionally. But I have a feeling it's an outdoor dog. And I know plenty people have outdoor dogs and it's not an issue with them. For me, personally, it is.

But when he said they were going to breed it......... Lovely. That's exactly what this country needs. Another litter of mixed breed chihuahuas. Because we certainly don't have nearly enough of those sitting in shelters and rescues in this area, do we? Uh, yeh - over 100 in the Nashville area, including it's suburbs, alone. So yeh, we really need Billy Bob to toss his in the back yard with the first small breed female that comes along in heat.

I tried to explain to him that all of my dogs and cats are spayed and neutered and that until we stop killing 3-4 million a year I would never think of breeding. I also mentioned that if his son was interested in another dog there were plenty chi mixes in Nashville waiting for a home, hoping they don't wind up on the losing end of that needle. He said he wanted one that would be like his.

Good grief. You can't make a new one. It's not a paper figurine. It's a gamble. It's not just genetics that make the dog turn out that way. You can't breed one and come out with a clone. Heck, even if you could clone it, there's no guarantee that it will be anything like your dog, let alone even similar in temperment. There's more than just genetics to it.

Needless to say, he was not interested in my request and hopped off the phone because he knew someone that he thinks still has a little female dog that might be interested. *sigh* What can you do??

You are doing all that "we" can do. *sigh* its a dang shame.

I just "adopted" a new pup last night.

She was trompeled on by a cow. She just had surgery and has a pin in her shoulder. The people we got her from were having a yard sale ( my neighbor) and we stumbled in there with all our kids. We must have had a target on our foreheads! I wasn't looking for another dog but this gal just blew me away. She just spent $500 getting this little pup's leg set with a pin and surgery and all that it entailed to keep the leg.....And she was offering this pup up to any Joe Schmoe that had a farm!!!! I was shocked!!!

Now don't get me wrong. This pup is sharp and alert and a really good girl. I am smitten with her. BUT... She will finish the treatment needed to get her leg better then will be spayed!!!

I don't understand owners that don't spay and neuter. I just really don't.

I do however HIGHLY respect people such as yourself that take on dogs and help them to find good homes. It's a labor of love and heartache. You are one of the good guys. :D

I quite agree! I could have been Bob Barker's sidekick; "Have your pet spayed or neutered."

I get frustrated, too, Mrs1885, about all the irresponsible breeding that goes on. I have two shih tzu/poodle mixes that I absolutely adore, but am saddened by how out of hand this whole "poo mix" phenomenon has gotten. I, personally, don't believe dog breeding is something to take on as a way to make a living because most people are in it just to make a buck and are not really concerned about the puppies' well being nor that of the mother dog. Good for you for making a difference in some dogs' lives. I wish I could do that. I get too attached and wouldn't be able to give them up!

BTW, Amy, your new girl is adorable! :D You sound like me. I let my girls convince me we needed to save a little kitten that was rescued from a construction site at the school this spring.

Bill's (my hubby) uncle had a poodle for years. I think the silly thing was like 16 when it died last year. That man.....Grrr...He made me so ANGRY ! He went out and PAID $400 For a shih tzu/poodle mix....Because it was called a teddybear.

I was so sick to my stomach!!! He could have rescued a pound puppy and saved a life! He was all offended when I said that I would never pay that for a mixed breed bad idea. Now...that was AFTER he went on for over an hour about the qualities of a "teddybear" breed. I had had enough and told him very politely that "teddybear" was not a recognized breed and that I didn't think that he got a "good deal"...(he actually bought the breeders story that since it was the last pup he was getting $200 off....I called BS on that one)..... *sigh*

I Dunno what makes folks so blind to the need of animals. I don't understand why people can't invest $100 for spaying/neutering (which is usually a lot less than $100) I mean costs a lot more than that over the course of what ...5-6 litters or more!

*sigh* this is always a tough issue.

Don't get me wrong, my family breeds....but nothing
like that especially to make a few bucks, all the dogs we
breed are purebred healthy registered dogs

I couldn't imagine like Dumas said , buying a hybrid dog
(basically a MUTT) for that much when you can save a life
at your local pound or shelter.

That's crazy.

Oh, I hate when I see dogs advertised as teddy bear or teacup! It means nothing. They're not hybrids either. A hybrid is the result of breeding two species, not breeds. Wait, is that the right word? You know what I mean; a zebra/horse cross or a wolf/dog cross (don't get me started on that one!) would be hybrids.

SMT, I like to refer to my dogs as glorified mutts!

i love wolf/Akita or wolf/Siberian husky mixes.

my BIL's wife convinced them to get a mixed breed puppy from a pet store that was closing down... that dog was at least over $1,000 and then since that puppy was growing up and getting big (what a surprise there!) they went out and bought a maltese(i think) puppy from yet again ANOTHER pet store. Hate to think what will happen when that pup grows up.

Tom and I were looking at shelters to adopt a dog. He was set on a German Shepherd, or atleast a mix that looked like a shepherd.. i was set on a dog.
We searched for quite a few months but nothing ever came up :( Then we briefly looked at breeders.
This one couple had German Shep. pups (parents are from Germany.. both competed in Schutzhund) Well the female never took while in Germany because it wasn't a "home" environment. So they decided to get an intact male. And guess what happened... they bred and had puppies!
The people, in my eyes, are back yard breeders. They didn't socialize the pups very well, they weren't leash trained (that actually believed puppies should not be trained or even disciplined until 1 year old (yeah ok, suuuure)
And when they both went to work, the puppies were locked in a horse stall until they came home. :(
We did buy him and most likely overpaid, but we love Chief.
And we WERE thinking about keeping him intact, but we wised up and neutered him (almost said geld there haha)

Also, when I worked at a kennel, there was a wolf/shepherd mix. He was an older dog but he hated anyone trying to help him. (he had trouble going up and down stairs) But there were times where I was terrified of him when he would go into "wolf mode"

It's best to leave wild wolves to mate with wild wolves and for domestic dogs to mate with domestic dogs.. crossing of the 2 is just bad news IMO
