Help! Looking for a good horse for my 9 year old

I have been looking for a good horse for my 9 year old to start on. What would you look for when going to look, what are types you would recommend? All I have looked at has been a lil frisky and I am a little scared of horses myself. I had a bad time when I was younger and I haven't been really comfortable since. So, I am looking for one to click with also. Any advice would be great!

welcome to HF . to start what level rider is your 9 yo if a beginner maybe the best thing to do is to start with lessons. that way he gets at least the basics down and he can learn and discover more if he wants to further his horse knowledge and get one of his own.

She is a beginner, but we have had ponies so she knows basics on. I have found someone that will do 1:1 lessons with her if we have our own horse for her to work with. I need a horse that will build her confidence up and not break it down. Thanks for the fast reply!

Have you ever owned a horse before? Basics are feed 2x/day, feet trimmed (or shoes) every 6-8 weeks, teeth floated yearly, shots 2x/year.

Anyway your local Craigs list has a place that gives lessons in your area (no idea if they are any good).

Anyway - once your child can ride and knows how to groom the horse and about saddle and bridle fit then they may be able to direct you to a place that sells horses. Older horses (10 years old or older) are great for beginning riders. Here's 2 "possibilities" from craigslist in your area:

Thanks! Yes, me and my husband have owned horses all of our life until about 5 years ago. We have the basics down, she can groom knows how to trail ride and well basic things you start out with. My sis in law has a horse out in our field that she has been feeding before school and after and grooming. I have been teaching her about saddle care and she has been reading up on horses. She can get on a pony or small horse and get from a to b, but she needs work.
