Thick tails ....
I have to say that after trying to keep my paint's thick and apparently beautiful tail looking decent...I much prefer my QH's thin, whispy tail. Mocha's tail is thick and so hard to keep. He always has twigs and branches in it and I can sit and comb it for an hour and then the next day it looks like dreadlocks again. I think I'm going to wash it and condition it today then braid it. Any other suggestions??
My horse's hair is just like that!!! He ALWAYS has burs and branches in it every day. I wouldn't braid it in the summer though, so he can use his tail to swat flies without it practically whipping him :) Braiding's your best bet!! I never have time to and I love the look of his tail!
This is my girls tail...i usually keep it braided. Take it down once a week and apply cowboy magic or some other detangler, then braid it back up. No tail bag.
In the summer, i wash it and then apply morrocain oil/argon oil conditioner. Then detangler, then brush it.
Yes i use a brush. She has such a thick tail and it is super healthy.
I use the same method on my new mare, and her tail has grown about 5 inches since i got her in August.

I braid it and wrap it up... In the summer or any time with flies Ill add some bailing twine to the wrapped up tail for swatting flies... It keeps her tail long, clean and detangled.
Keeping it clean, braided and wrapped up is the best bet! You can braid up a clean dry tail, bring it through the top of the braid (below the tail bone) to fold it up and stuff it in a clean tube sock (cut the top of the sock into 4 strands and tie it into the tail below the tail bone). During the summer you can add some strands of baling twine to help swish flies! Just make sure you take it down and wash/ condition it every few weeks, and make sure the braid isn't too tight at base of the tail bone. Best of luck!
