Polos and jumping
Hey, I've heard a few times that jumping in polos is dangerous.
I most definitely agree, if they're improperly wrapped or hindering the movement of the fetlock joint.
It's silly and I do it just to make myself feel better, but I enjoy wrapping all four of my mare's legs in polos in cold weather. Because I hate when my muscles are cold. I know a sufficient warm up is enough, but I feel a little better.
We don't jump anything big, especially in the winter because less work on both of our parts and harder ground. I know polos are not for support, but is it okay for me to keep the polos on when jumping? I just wanted to have another opinion. Thanks! (:
the main reason polos can be dangerous while jumping is if they came off. you would have to wrap them really wrong to hurt the horse. also, horses dont have muscle on their lower limbs so i wouldnt worry about keeping them warm !
Huh, I thought they had some muscle down there! lol
Okay, thanks! (:
If wrapped correctly polos actually do offer support. Splint boots actually don't offer support, they protect more from contact. My previous trainer at a huge hunter/jumper barn actually told me once that horses are better off jumping in polo wraps than boots. I suppose it just depends on the horse, though, and their needs. But I don't see how it could be dangerous jumping in polos =]
Yeah, the only time I use boots is when go out xc or are going to be working really hard on uneven terrain.
