Type of braid for long mane??

I love my horses mane, it goes past his neck and is SUPER thick. I don't want to chop it off like most horse shows expect ( note: I can't do breed shows, my horse is grade) and I don't want to do the typical horse show braids ( don't know what their called) like the pic below because I'm scared it would take forever and his mane might be too thick for it. So what type of braid should I do??

We do barrels, poles, jumping and reining. Know any that would work in all those classes??

Not sure about jumping, but I think a running braid would be your best bet.

you can do big rosettes - i've seen them done before on arabs since they have healthy, full manes...it is against their show rules to cut the mane so they do hunter rosettes but larger. I know it isn't original, but in endurance, we just do lots of regular braids and let them hang down. As long as they are uniform in thickness, evenly spaced and looks tidy, they will still be pretty even as plain as it might seem. Good for you for keeping the mane long!

But for jumping, try the rosettes - it might not be as hard as you think once you figure it out - kind of like tying your shoes - soon you can do it with your eyes closed. But for the rest of your events, especially reining, put some showsheen in it and a little pomade (to keep it from being frizzy) and let it fly!:D

Here are large rosettes you could do for jumping - never know until you try

Awesome!! Thanks! I like the large rosette thing!! I think it'll really look elegant!! I've always done WP where they have to have their manes short and I HATED it!! Love the"natural" look!! Thanks so much guys!!!!!

I really like running braids- especially for thick manes. If your horse's mane is really thick, you can split it down the middle and do one on each side of his neck. There are really endless possibilities, since it's pretty much just a french braid, ha ha. I personally like the running braids that are on top of the crest, not on the side- it looks neater to me.

I also love the running braids.. for me - they're fairly easy to do. Try you-tube for some good videos on how-to.

I'd do a running braid as well. They're very fast to do and look nice.

I like the running braid as well! I have an Andalusian mare who I do this to. Check out this youtube Video

I never thought about doing two - one on each side...my half welsh has a natural mane that splits right down the middle. He has so much thick hair, that it looks like a full mane PLUS some on each side! LOL!

The running braid is really easy, but BEWARE. The braid slips easily one the horse moves his neck, especially if he reaches for grass. After that, it looks bad and floppy.
