Question for those of you who make rope halters
HI I want to make a few rope halters for my own horses. My tack store has very little selection and its hard to buy on line when you dont know what the rope feels like. I want to make ones out of the softer rope but I am at a loss as to what kind of rope to buy or where to buy it. Any suggestions?

I was told yacht rope from the hardware store is great. It's soft and won't stretch too badly, even when wet.

PS - this is the same brand and type rope that PP and CA use, so you can't go wrong. I use 1/4 inch for my halters, but you can use the smaller and larger diameters as well. The 1/2 inch diameter is for lead ropes, just to give you some perspective.

Braided polypropylene...3/8 for the halter, 1/2 inch or 5/8 for the leads. Here you can get it at the farm stores but also look on Ebay, they have tons of it

^^ I agree. It's fairly inexpensive and works great..

I buy the good stuff, double braid yacht rope specifically made for equine use. I can get all colours ad also design my own colour patterns. It's a good soft rope that sill has some body. I use the 6mm. I have had rope from other companies. An 8mm stiff rope (very hard to knot but fantastic halter that holds its shape well) and a super soft 8mm from the same company that was too soft for my liking, didn't have any body, and the rope was quite dry, hard to melt the ends.
This is where I buy from now: https://www.ropeonline.com/ Posted via Mobile Device

I get double braid poly from home depot, walmart or lowes, they have a bunch of colors to choose from. As was said already, 3/8 of an inch for halters.
Edit to add: I really need to get a new picture for my avatar since I don't use web halters...lol.
