Gatorade in horses water?
 

I was watching this video, and this girl after a hard summer work out gave her a scoop on the powder Gatorade. I understand it replenished the electrolytes, but can horses have it?

Yep! It's common when it's extra warm out and the horse is working hard, as well as for show horses who won't drink the water at show grounds.

I used to put Gatorade in my horses water a week before we would be leaving for a competition in another state etc. They would drink it since it always tasted the same. Never had a problem with it.

I've never heard of people giving horses Gatorade as a source of electrolytes becuase they made gels and pastes for that specific purpose. Was it at a show or anywhere foreign to the horse? Many people who show use Kool-Aid for their horses because some are picky and won't drink water due to taste difference at shows. So before the show, they'll start adding Kool-Aid powder so the horse is acclimated to the taste and can be tricked into drinking water with the same flavor elsewhere.

not enough electrolyte in gatorade to do a horse any good. Its just a flavor thing, might get them drinking better. I had a young QH, that loved beer. would drink it out of a can, butt head wouldnt ever set the can back down though.

probably better to use electrolyte supplements. Gatorade has a lot of sugar in it and you'd have to give the horse a lot of it to equal the same amount of electrolytes they'd get from a supplement. That's a lot of sugar.

Never thought about using something to keep the water tasting the same away from home. Have never had picky drinkers, I guess.

I give my horse Gatorade straight from the bottle, but he also gets coffee, vodka, and beer if he gives me those big browns when I'm drinking it or he visits 'grampy's house' for family affairs. Doesn't do them much harm but also doesn't give them much unless they're drinking a bucketful of it. If you want to give electrolytes it's better to get the stuff made for horses but Gatorade isn't going to hurt them unless it's all you're giving them to drink.

The only way to get my boy to drink at a show is gatorade straight from the bottle, silly boy
