My Cat's Cat House and Enclosed Yard

Ok, so you got me. I have been called the crazy cat lady. But I wear it as a badge of honor. I love cats. Yes, they would come before my horses! lol

Anyway. Forever and a day I have always wanted a Cat House with a safe enclosed yard so they could go out and sit in the sunshine, catch that dumb bird that thought it could fly into their yard, eat the grass (only to later throw it up..) etc.

So now we bought our our place and I started searching for a shed on Craig's List. They are so darn expensive at Home Depot!
It took me a while to find one that I actually liked, and that was still available, and not priced like it was still AT Home Depot!
My husband drive tow trucks. When I found one, I gave him the money I saved for it and told him where it was and to see if he could get a run down near it. He did. And they loaded it up onto the flat bed.
(Lots of tow companies will move sheds by the way.)

The ad had pictures, but not very good - as most CL pictures are....
I had lucked out with this shed. It was 2 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the guy said it was AND it had a 4 or 5 foot over hang for three quarters of the length on one side! AND the guy gave us five 5" diameter round posts to roll the shed off the truck with.

We positioned it with the tow truck and fine tuned it with our 5-ton truck. Yes I know, over kill, but my husband wanted to play with his truck....
Pulled out the over hang and go that put back on. The round posts that came with it, we used for fence posts.

For the fence, I wanted to be able to walk around the yard, not hunched over. But the 6 foot tall fencing was expensive. But we had figured out if we got the 4' twisted wire fencing for the bottom and then put the cheaper 2' welded wire above that, it would be cheaper! For the top of the yard to enclose it, we used 2" diameter chicken wire. We had to buy one more post for the yard too.

We insulated the walls and the ceiling and put paneling up over that. And the floor got some linoleum. Add in an oil heater, kitty condos, chairs, scratchers, towers, and blankets and ta-dah!

To get into and out of the yard, we had to cut a door and frame it out. I made a little ramp to get up into the house (I have a couple of disabled cats that can't jump very well.)

Some inside pictures before we got more scratchies and just before I had set down rugs and blankets....

I had stopped at the little pet shop one day when I had Squash with me. They had this really cute Horsey Scratchie there. He LOVED it! And I got it for him for Christmas. It doesn't have ears any more. They've been loved off! :D

Thanks Drafty!

I think in total I have spent *maybe* $700 for the whole thing?
I've seen other people make a frame and enclose that and attach it to the side of their house. The cats go in and out of it with a cat door put into an insert in the window.
And of course you could always enclose a porch and put a pet door in the wall or door to the house.

It keeps the cats safe. I've always hated kicking my cats out, even when I was just a little kid. My mother thought it was fine. Even when one just disappeared, or was killed by some idiot and their car, or came back injured.
Never could understand doing that. We had a fence up so the dogs couldn't go running around and have stuff happen to them, why shouldn't we have looked after the cats the same way?

That's a lot of cats! My mom had some in a dog kennel with a top on it for a while, they were feral and she had caught them all so she could get them fixed and then turn them loose again (they live in her storage barn). I remember they used to hang from the top of the cage and move across it like monkeys. We called them Limarcats!

Excellent job, Danielle. I'm a cat person myself - I've got both barn and house cats.

LOL farmpony! Limarcats! That made me laugh. Thank you mom for me for helping those feral kitties. She made their lives a whole lot easier. :)
And that isn't all of them there. Some are still semi or full ferals. They like to hide. But they actually made the choice to stay inside. I have one rehabbed feral inside the house with us. With us, he is a total lover. He mobs my husband when he comes home for hugs and kisses. He sleeps with us.
Yup, that's right. I sleep with ferals. ;)
There is nothing like it in the world when one decides to allow me to touch them for the first time.

Thanks Chevaux! I wish I could have a barn cat or two. But I move too many cats off this road we live on. (yes, I move cats that have been killed by careless people off the road. I can't stand to watch them be repeatedly mangled until there isn't anything left....)
Some times our neighbor's kitties have come over to our barn. I caught one and got him fixed. So we kinda have barn kitties. Borrowed ones!

My boyfriend's cat LOVES being outside, but he's discovered he can get out of the yard and my boyfriend would be absolutely devastated if something happened to the Cosmo.

I have inside/outside cats. But we don't live on a busy road, plus, they seem perfectly happy with a couple of acers, a barn, and tack room to explore, and plenty of horse poop to smell. Never had one leave the farm. :) (At least that we know of haha)

Also, Jeepngirl that's so cool. Should really help you with feral cats getting used semi inside places, while still being outside like their used to! Never thought of getting a cat house before. Just gonna use the excuse.. "but it will add worth to the property" xD..

JeepnGirl 02-24-2013 03:15 AM

LOL!
And actually if you do what we did, it just might add value to your place. I didn't think of that. :)

I know most of my cat would like to be outside, that is why we did the enclosed yard. But I do actually have a couple of cats - a couple of the rehabbed ferals believe it or not, that want nothing to do with the great outdoors any longer. I know, because a couple of times a door was left open or the house would shift and it would just randomly open. Some of, if not all would be out side milling around. Not the ferals. They were laying on the couch and when we came in, had this look on their faces, "Um yeah, so the door opened and they went outside, but *we* didn't no sir! We are good kitties!"

;)
