Feathered horse - mange or mud fever?
Such a pain to have such a heavy feathered horse. I am really frustrated with all the little problems. I have always tried to keep his scratches under control. Always try to dry his feathers with the hair dryer and not wash his legs so often. I was so focused on his pastern area that I almost not noticed his other problem. I always knew about it but it was not so concerning and I didn't paid to much attention to it. He always had on two spots on his canons under his knee some kind of dandruff, but bigger in dimension than dandruff and sticky, adhering to the hair.
Two days ago I noticed that those spots were bigger and I tried to clean his legs by combing the dandruff out of his feather. The skin was thick in that area and he had two spots were he was almost bleeding. I made a video just to show you how it looks because I'm not good at explaining.
My question is, how to treat those things? I don't want to be forced to trim all his feather.
and some photos
I would try washing with a betadine scrub, then treating with tea tree oil- that should keep the skin soft/ get rid of dandruff and yuck without letting it get gunky. Love the braided feathers! Good idea to keep it clean!
Best of luck!
Here you can see the whole horse :D to see why it's hard to just shave his feather.
