Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Has anyone had any experience with a horse who has SCC? Anyone know the prognosis or if there is anything that can help to keep this kind of cancer at bay?
One of our Horses had it on his sheath at age 5, the Vet gave him several shots of Chemo and 3 years later he is perfectly fine :-)
I had a mare who had it. It originally popped up on her eye, and we thought we had removed it completely after surgery, and then eventually removing her eye, but it had spread throughout her body and I lost her January 7th of last year.
That being said, I believe most horses can have a successful recovery with it, so long as the owners stay on top of things. My mare just got the short end of the stick.
The prognosis for most non-melanoma skin cancers is very good. There are so many kinds, though, that it is very important that the pathology be done to identify the specific cancer. Our youngest mare had a basal cell cancer about the size of a dime removed 1+ year ago and it has not returned.
They are caused by a mutation in the skin cells. In people this is usually caused by too much sun over the years (I had 2 basal cell cancers removed last year). In horses, they can occur from insect bites or stings (or unknown causes).

There are many black salve/bloodroot salve naysayers, but I've had nothing but success with it. I've used it on my horse, husband and dad. lol
My best gelding had an aggressive sarcoid, and it was gone it 2 weeks. My daddy had numerous carcinomas burned, removed etc., from the dermatologist only to have them reappear months later. Once he used the bloodroot salve, they never reappeared. Same with my husband.
It's a very old remedy, and in our world (rodeo/ranching) a well known remedy for sarcoids, cancer & carcinomas. There's no one size fits all cause. There are many parasitic, and viral connections to cancer, carcinomas, and sarcoids. There is a belief that sarcoids are strictly a virus, but there is a parasitic connection as well. Same with carcinomas. In some cases there is a viral connection, in others a parasitic connection. The guy who makes Clean Horse salve is an expert on this subject.
It's def. worth a try for $50. We use Clean Horse (cleanhorse.com), and this man's product has worked great for us, and people we know. There are several bloodroot sources, although it's getting harder to find. If you try black salve, aka cowboy mud, bloodroot salve, etc, just make sure they have good reviews, and have the same ingredients as cleanhorse.com. Must have those ingredients for it to work.
It's not as caustic or aggressive as people think. I actually think it's less aggressive, as does not damage healthy cells. It only destroys cells that need to GO! Good luck!
That is awesome to know!! Thank you so much! I will look into that!
Does anyone know the prognosis of untreated SCC? Rather bad on the vulva of a mare. Multiple open sores that look almost like warts.
Our mare's basal cell cancer started off looking like a sting. A month later it looked like a wart about the size of a pencil and stayed like that for about 9 months. After that, it more than doubled in size within a month, so we had the vet remove it and do the pathology. The pathology report said the edges where 'clean', i.e. no cancer cells, so the chance of it returning where less likely.
Sounds like your case may be beyond a simple surgical procedure. Has your vet given you any options?
Not really, it's kind of a complicated situation. It's a rescue mare and I don't personally think the vet is TOO serious about helping her since she has multiple problems.
About that salve, it says it's for sarcoids, will it work for other types of cancer as well?
That is very good to know! Thank you so much!
