Slight Shots Emergency?

Well..vet is coming at 11 or so today and I'd like to know what shots are necessary for Western PA and what is necessary for most shows/fairs..

I don't want to pay for any extras that are unnecessary seeing as I totalled my car and would like a few hundred at least left in my bank account, and I don't want to miss any that I'll need for showing either..

I know I need a coggins and rabies..but that's the extent of my knowledge currently..lol.

i would just ask the vet what they would recommend. it partly depends on what your horse got in the fall, which the vet would have records of.

Horse hasn't seen a vet to my knowledge, I just got her on saturday.

I plan to ask the vet, just thought I'd ask here too though.

The only thing required to show is a negative coggins.

If the horse has never seen a vet, you should get her the full round of vaccinations. Rabies is especially important, because it's a horrible way for an animal to die.

First the most sensible thing is to ASK the vet. The vet, in turn, will ask you what your horse will be doing and will you be staying within PA or leaving the state?

That little word "showing"? That means you will need to give your horse more shots than I need to give my horses that don't leave the property:shock:

Your checkbook is going to be dusted, no matter how you cut this because you plan on showing -- sorry:-(

Influenza as it's highly contagious, all the encephalitis . This is a combo shot. We don't do rabies as it's not in the area and that's a huge area. I have a problem with the coggins test. If the horse doesn't have swamp fever the day the blood is drawn it's only for sure disease free that day. Two weeks down the road it could contract it but the test says it's fine.

While I absolutely agree regarding the pointlessness of the Coggins, it doesn't change the fact that it is/will be required if the OP wishes to show. The point of the test is a debate for another day.

I usually gave my horses the Intervet Prestige V or just the Prestige V. If the vet is there, just ask him what he recommends or the minimal vaccinations he recommends to be show legal. I would definitely get the equine infuenza shot, hands down.

Thanks for dragging Raina down from the pasture for me. I would have loved to make it and ask questions but it was during work hours and no work = no horse! Let me know what he says :)

Most shows and playdays around here don't even require a coggins. I live in eastern Pa, I do rabies, coggins and a five way for spring shots.
