How far is too far?

How many hours traveling should you go without getting the horse out of the trailer and walking him around? I've been on a 4hr trip without the owners having to do that. Would that be an ok amount of time without stopping to stretch their legs?

4 hours is my limit - after that I stop at a rest stop and take them out and they usually pee (if they haven't already in the trailer) and I let them eat grass (get the head down - clear the airways) and most times they will roll. Twenty minutes later, they go in and off we go for the next leg of the trip.

One of my horses was loose in a stock trailer and was able to walk around and face whichever direction he chose. The trip was a little over 8 hrs and he arrived in good shape.

I read an article in a horse magazine. It said that horses actually travel better without stopping. When they stop, they tend to get more nervous. I'll try to find the magazine and give you more information.
