I need to instill some rate into my Squiggy's brain. :P

Red is going to be the same way. He's go-go-go! And I'm going to really need to reinforce rate with him.

Are you having trouble with Squiggy blowing by a barrel? Or what exactly is giving you issues?

What I like to do is physically stop before each barrel, at the exact point I would SIT in my seat during a real run. Make sure their hip stays inward toward the barrel when you stop, or even on purpose use your outside heel to push the hip in. (We don't want to create any shouldering in problems.)

Then I will circle each barrel twice, to really instill that turn, and make sure they finish it. If I need to go around it more than twice to get a perfect turn, I will.

More importantly, is my body cues. I am making sure that I SIT in my seat at that precise point every time. Basically, I want it to become a natural instinct for him to STOP when my body sits. This, of course, can be carried throughout your regular riding; not just when schooling on the barrels.

If you need to really reinforce the stop, you can back up a few steps.

Or you can do a counter bend away from the barrel, instead of turning it. (good drill for horses that anticipate)

She doesn't blow by barrels, she just want to have rate. LOL. She turns like a damn, but she never sits and rates. I have done a fair bit of stopping (sometimes backing) in the pocket and pushing her hip over.

Lately, our riding consists of a little bareback jog around the yard and I've just been working on her stopping when I sit back and the backing up when I squeeze my legs.

Once I get my dirt patch back from the snow, I'll have more of an idea of what exactly she's doing.

Would you have a recent video of what she's doing?

She's still turning the barrel okay though? Or is her pocket too big?

If she still turns the barrel quick, and keeps her hindquarters under her, I guess I won't worry too much if she doesn't "feel" like she's rating.

Sometimes, I'd send Beau so hard to the first barrel, I'm thinking in my head that there's no way he's gonna make the turn. But he was very honest: Always turned it every time.

I guess for the most part, I would just say to continue to do lots and lots of stopping if you want to work on rate. Or lots of transitions. Extended lope, to collected lope. Extended trot, to collected jog.

Is she not using her hind end when turning?

I just dont feel any rate, and I'm not used to it, ya know?

Maybe she's just the type that doesn't need to rate hard to make a turn.

Who knows, I'm still figuring her out.

No, she does use her butt. I drilled that part into her brain, LOL

That's hard to say without a video. But since she's turning, maybe she's just not what your used to. My colt you can't feel him rating he's so smooth when he sets up to turn unlike my older horse.

Could just be her turning style.

As long as she's making a nice turn, keeping her speed up, and is keeping her hind end engaged, that might "just be her".

Red feels very different to me as well too, because he's so very short strided compared to Beau. It's taking me a while to figure him out too. So I understand that feeling!
