NON aggression problem
So i have 4 pit bulls 1 is purebred, 3 are mixed, and i have a 110 pound lab. they usually keep EVERYONE away, or at least in the car when they come over. they arent aggressive in any way, but they look like they are!!!
So im getting scared that people are descovering my dogs are non aggressive. I came out to get something from the car the other night and i heard a man say "O...F***" and ran through my yard. my dogs didnt even bark. i think he was stealing things because iv had stuff go missing lately.
I wasnt seriously worried about it until today, when i went to our little local store, the only store around unless you want to drive 2 hours. the police were there questioning the owner. apparently the day before a 12 year old girl was walking home from the store and a man raped her.
Now i live where it takes almost 2 hours for the police to get here, up in the mountains. I have anxiety around people which is why i have my lab, who is a service dog. I literally go into what is called a "self induced acoma" around people when i get nervous and i will literally stand there and not move for hours, the last time i did it was in kmart about a year ago because my friends "didnt want my dog in the car". Once when i DID have my lab a man grabbed me and attempted to drag me and my lab just stood there like a dumba$$. This makes me very nervous.
Does anyone have suggestions? Is there any way i can make my dogs more aggressive towards strangers?
Also my lab was supposed to be a Police dog, but he wasnt aggressive so i took him in and trained him for a service dog.
Get another dog. I have a lab who I can't get to stop barking at everyone! He woke me up the other morning because someone was walking down the street. He is good with children but very wary around strange adults.
Other suggestions- see if the PD offers a women's self defense class. Get pepper spray and carry it with you. Also get a carry and conceal permit and learn how to shoot.
Lots of signs on beware of dog... Do not enter... etc.
I have plenty of beware of dog signs to because my old dog who my neighbors poisoned(they kept threatening to because they hate pit bulls so after he died i adopted 4 that were on kill lists) used to bite people.
I say the sight of your dog's alone is enough to put somebody off approaching your house. Years ago somebody was telling me how a group of robbers had been caught by the gardai - in the car they found maps of roads and estates with houses drawn on. There was a red X on all the houses with dogs.
Also, while my two dogs are sweet and great with our family - I feel confident that if somebody were to come into the house - the territorial instincts would come out and they would defend us. I say your dogs will do the same.
Yes but the man was IN the yard WITH my dogs and when i came out he ran off... my dogs stay outside except my lab, and they didnt bark or run him off. They should have attacked a stranger.
Heck they probably let him pet them!!! I got pits because there are a lot of drugs around here, its a horrid area, i cant ride my horse off the property without worrying about getting shot
I can't say I've ever met somebody who is upset that their does AREN'T aggressive. It isn't something you really want to encourage - what if your dog bites someone? What if your dog bites YOU? It's difficult to train a dog to only be aggressive to certain people.
If your dog bites a person, and they complain about it, your dog could get put down - whether or not they were doing something wrong on your property. And even just teaching your dog to growl, or something - teaching them that ANY aggression is good can very quickly lead to more out of control aggression.
I do not particularly approve of what you plan to do - but if you insist on it, please do it carefully. I wouldn't want something to happen to your dogs. (Too, if someone is on your property with a weapon and encounters an aggressive dog, I doubt they'd hesitate to kill it).
Your last sentence... "The dogs should have attacked the stranger." I don't even know what to think of that. you don't WANT your dogs attacking people. People who train attack dogs are always the ones who end up getting their dogs put down, and I quite honestly see it as a sign of irresponsible dog ownership. To train a dog to go after someone on command (like a police dog does) is one thing (that I also don't' like, unless you're an officer) but teaching a dog to go after anyone that it doesn't know is incredibly irresponsible and just fuels bad behavior that will quite easily grow beyond your control. You'd just be proving your neighbors right about pit bulls and increasing the bad stigma about them.
I understand you live in a bad neighborhood, but here's things you can do about that. Self defense classes, pepper spray, heck get your concealed carrying license. Carry a small knife, and always a cell phone. Always lock your house. Just the fact that you HAVE dogs will be enough to deter most people - And I do think if it came down to it, they would step up. My dog is a 200 pound teddy bear whose never even bothered to growl at anyone, but when a dog came after me to attack me he stepped p to the plate and took the hit. (And I could have DEFINITELY pressed charges against that guy's aggressive dog and gotten it taken away.... Just to throw that out there).
Edit: If your'e in such a bad area, why don't you look at moving somewhere else? (Just a thought). I don't think I could handle living in an area as bad as yours seems to be.
My dogs dont leave the yard, and if someone comes over they get locked in the back. I have these dogs for protection because men HAVE hurt me before, and because i go into a self induced acoma i will freeze and NOT BE ABLE TO MOVE even if i have a knife or a gun it would not help if i froze. This is why i want aggresive dogs, to protect me from men. Like the guy that was in my yard.
And PS i dont care what my neighbors think they are cat people and hate all dogs horses cows ect. they forced me to get rid of my cows because they "'stink"
O and i CANNOT move because i take care of my grandpa, who is very old and owns a ranch in the area. If he got hurt he wouldnbt be able to call 911 because he doesnt have a phone. i go up and take care of him everyday and get paid for it, even though i would do it for free.
Sorry, but most pits I've met are big pansies. Most of the bully-type breeds are people-lovers. If a stranger knows his/her breeds, they'll know this and won't have a problem approaching property where there are pits. If you want a guard dog, go with a breed that was bred to guard (GSD, Rottweiler, malinois, Great Pyrenees, etc). There's no real way to train a dog to be aggressive toward strangers. Being aggressive toward wild animals (like the coyote you said your dog killed) is totally different than being aggressive toward people.
Best guard dog I've ever owned is my 60lbs Aussie/St Bernard. He looks like a sweet, fluffy dog, but if he think you don't belong even near the property, he will bark (big, deep St. Bernard bark), and if you don't get the hint, he'll charge the fence with his hackles raised. I didn't train him to be that way, he just has the natural instinct to guard (myself and the trainers I've talked to think that it's the Saint Bernard in him, as they were originally livestock guard dogs and hunting dogs).
