Help with feeding a hot horse!!
I have an arabian mare that has dropped a little weight and i want to bulk her up a little bit without making her too hot.She currently gets fed twice per day. Straight alfalfa for one feeding and alfalfa/bermuda pellets for the other feeding. my BO gave me free range to give her extra pellets after excercise but im thinking that maybe something without alfalfa would be better.
So do you think teff or timothy would be better suited? or i am open to other suggestions too!
Ps i would be feeding her this about 3-4 days a week
Thank you :D
Stop feeding anything alfalfa five minutes ago:-)
If she's getting sweet feed in her feed pan, get rid of that equally as fast:-)
Grass hay without any alfalfa or clover mixed into it.
If she needs to gain weight, I first would ask why she's dropped weight. If there are no medical issues, such as teeth or worms, beet pulp will "quietly" add weight and so will equine rice bran.
Tractor Supply carries both. If you go the rice bran route, it is Manna Pro's Max-E Glo. Rice bran provides a cool energy to horses without amping them up.
Hope this helps:-)
It does help! i will definitely talk to my BO about those options. As for the weight loss, health problems have been ruled out and i think its safe to say that it is simply a result of increased exercise from when i got her about 7 months ago.
another question, is timothy considered grass hay?
Timothy is grass...and a good one.
You could also feed her Fat and Fiber pellets top dressed with canoal oil or corn oil to give fat and no energy.
i think i will also try top dressing with canola or corn oil, gradual changes of course
What is she getting for roughage....the pellets only?
I have yet to see a horse get hot on alfalfa, if there was no grain involved.
I would start with grass hay, free choice, best in any type of slowfeeder and would see if she'd gain with adding alfalfa/timothy pellets, maybe a pound a day. With that either a vit/min supplement or a ration balancer. And if she still needs more, add, as was said, beet pulp, or ricebran, or oil.
stabilized Rice Bran either pellet or meal, beet pulp, Omega Horse shine, cool calories, triple crown low starch.
All above will add calories without making them hot.
How many hours is she going without roughage. Keep in mind that the faster a horse takes in feed, the faster it comes out. It is very unhealthy for a horse to consume all it's feed befor noon and have nothing until 5 or 6. The gut isn't designed for that type of schedule and a horse can develop ulcers.
