I can't stop my pony
I loan a pony that is really exited when we go on hacks, I ride in a group of 4 and I am usually at the back of the ride. When we go into a canter, Foxy canters right up the other horses bums! he starts to yank the reins out of my hands and i have no control until he slows down by himself. I have tried sitting back in the saddle, but it doesn't help at all! I fell off a few weeks ago and fractured my elbow, i am worried that something worse might happen if i all again :L I love Foxy to bits, but i need to learn to control him! HELP! :?
Go back to slower speeds and work one one rein stops, flexing his poll, flexing in general really, and just trot in a straight line and randomly throw your weight back, give him a second, then pull back until he stops. Eventually, he will learn that when you sit back, it means STOP! (: Then move it up to a canter, then a gallop (: Dont go faster until you get complete control :D
i have a similar problem :)
If you need to stop suddenly either try the one rein stop or you could try shortening your right rein a little more than normal and grabing a chunk of mane and brace your right hand on top of the crest, just above the withers, with your left hand shorten it significantly and then pull back quite hard.
I would only do this if your pony got too close to another horse to be in kicking range.
Try to do lots of transitions and circles to get him listening to you again.
And remember to breath! Sometimes when I am cantering a fast horse I tend to stop breathing and get stiff. Now I just pretend I'm a horse that is breathing/snorting... I know it sounds silly but it makes you take some deep breaths and relaxes your muscles a bit and I find it slows the horse down a little.
What are his brakes like in an arena?
Sounds like you need to do some schooling out on the trails. Keep it to trot until he settles

I had a problem like this many years ago and worked on it and after a lot of work that didnt seam to make the problem go away (so we thought) one day I took the lead of the hack and the horse was as good as gold and stoped nicely and listen to my voice and body language... The next time I went to the back and the problem was back, Again the next time I tried in a diffrent position in the group and all seamed okay enless the horse in front got way ahead then my horse would pick up speed to catch up. It worked out the horse seamed to hate 'being left beind' when in a group, but with a lot of work and time and patiance i mananged to get the horse out of it. Sadly that horse is now in 'Rainbow bridge' running free in the sky.
