Round pen help
I recently got a round pen but we still haven't sand or anything under it so it is siting on red dirt(well its mud right now) and I was wondering what the best footing that is inexpensive is. Right now it is about 40 feet wide but we might add on to it later.
The reason I can't just use the red dirt is because when it rains it get really slick and in the summer when it is dry it gets really hard. I also wanted to know how thick the footing needs to be. Thanks!!:-P
I'm not sure what's best. I know lots of places around used to use river sand but it would still get bad in rain.
I know a few people that use wood mulch based footings and are really happy with it.
One of your main concerns is drainage - no matter what you use if it doesn't drain you'll probably end up dragging the clay up. Some people build up with crushed rocks or something.
Hopefully someone else will be more help than me.

I was thinking about puting sand rock down before putting sand over it but I wasn't sure if that was the best thing to do. The mulch sounds like a good idea but I'm afraid it would wash away.
No stones. They wind up coming up to the surface. I know two instances where this was done and within a year, what a mess. Lots of stone picking went on. You don't have to do the whole pen, just a 4' path about a foot in from the panels. As the horse moves it will go outward anyway. That can be over come with plywood or boards along the bottom. Course sand is nice. Keep the horse off it in wet weather so as not to churn the sand into the clay. If you're careful it should be good for about 5 years before needing new sand. You might have to use Roundup to control grass if it comes up too thick. A 40' ring is a bit small for a horse, 50' is better.
