Mare ate an egg shell and all!
As some of you know we have some chickens and their coop is right next to the barn/run in. So I was feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs and then went into the barn to get the horses feed ready, I set the eggs on tack trunk in the barn and went along my business getting feed ready, let horses in to eat and then went to put hay out. Just as I was coming back in from haying I see Bella sniffing the eggs, I never expected her to eat it :lol: but sure enough she starts mouthing it and chomp lol, I'm pretty sure she ate the whole thing and then acted like it tasted bad(but it was already gone lol).
Should I be concerned about her eating the egg?
I don't think so. The gelding here, sneaky little thing, confused a bucket of eggs with a bucket of grain once and ate an egg or two before he had time to notice it wasn't grain (the look on his face was priceless). The only thing it did to him was make him more respectful of shoving his face in buckets.
She'll should be fine. I've actually heard of people that feed eggs to their horses (in their feed) for shiny coats. Also we were told that an old Ukrainian method for calves with scours was to feed them raw eggs shell and all. Actually, the shell was the most important part.
Won't hurt her a bit. It used to be common to put an egg in their grain every day. It actually helps their coat glow. I believe some dog folks do as well, but I think dogs only get the yolk...emphasis on the "think" part. :-)
Anyway, nothing to worry about at all.
I feed eggs to my dog - yolk and white. He thinks it's a huge treat (I think it's gross).
My mother used to scramble eggs and feed it to her Dobermans every day as part of their breakfast... Spoiled dogs ate better than I did! ;)
I wouldn't worry too much. I had a donkey that ate a raw egg (shell and all) and it didn't bother him one bit!
My horse will eat bacon and egg burgers if they are left unattended.
I doubt an egg will harm your horse. They are high is protein and the shell is calcium, neither of which would do much harm especially in the levels that an egg contains.
On the feeding eggs to dogs note - My terrier gets all of my infertile budgerigar eggs. He loves them.
It's good to know though that though horses do eat them, it doesn't do any harm - I finalized agistment for my boy today, and found an egg in the food bucket in the stall!
Good to know it's not going to hurt her and may actually be beneficial...we have enough eggs, maybe I'll start putting one in everyone's dinner lol
