Senate Panel - Background Checks ?

.

Senate panel ready to OK gun background checks - Yahoo! News

This Bill wants background Checks done for Private Sales, that is stupid imo

Sorry, selling my gun to my brother or friend I have known for 20 years does not require both of us to march to the courthouse or police department or anywhere else to pay a fee to do a background check.

Not a single gun used in any of the shootings in the last 20 years came from a private sale. They were bought with a background checks or the most recent one, the guns were stolen from the guys mother, not to mention the AR-15 so high on the ban list was not even used in that horrific tragedy, only pistols were used.

The anti-gunners are getting ridiculous, imo

Background checks for sales at gun shows and for random people yes, private sale like you said STG I agree that is pushing it.

I would pass a background check. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have an evil plot in mind now.

The problem is defining "family" and "random people". I hate the idea of this impediment, even though I am much better at BUYING guns than I am at selling them. I have only sold one in my two gun safes.

But, how can you stop the "straw sales" and the thug going to someone with an ad in the paper without universal checks? If you can prove blood tie it is OK?

I guess I would just hope a rapid infrastructure could be in place if this passes. If a person has to wait a day or two for a background to clear, it might be a good "cool down period".

I guess this shows I'm not 100% against this ruling, even if it will complicate my life.

Only way back ground checks will work for private citizens is with a natioinal gun registry, without that registry it wont work. So, what is the eventual goal of this legislation?

This Bill is a result of recent shootings. How could this Bill have Prevented them? It would not have.

Could this Bill have prevented any of the Mass Shootings in the Last 20 years? No, I could not find any evidence it would have stopped one single one of them.

Don't sales at gun shows fall under "private sales"? Do you think these people know everyone they sell a gun to? Studies indicate 40% of guns sold in this country are sold via private sales.

And as far as the statement about none of the guns used in shootings in the past 20 years coming from a private sale: the US has had roughly one mass shooting every month for the past 4 years...while I don't have the resources to check each and every single one, I'd love to see some sort of proof of this statement. Weren't the Columbine guns originally sold at a gun show?

To me a Gun Show is not a Private Sale, it is an Organized Event. While there are individuals swapping guns, to me it falls under non-private and a background check could easily be done On-Site, no inconvenience to anyone.

It is the part about Non-show Private Events that is Ridiculous

I will be candid with the real name of this "game." It is
"Let's look like we are doing something by writing new legislation, but, at the same time, we're not going to enforce CURRENT legislation."
Back ~ 30 years ago my DH (atty) was an Asst. SA, and was fighting to prosecute people who lied on their gun registration applications. NOBODY was interested in pursuing it. Today it still happens. It is illegal. The laws exist but are unevenly enforced.
Do you know what will happen if counties and cities and states decide to enforce all of their laws? Most Americans would be dumbfounded at those things that are illegal, but are laws that most people break every day. So many laws are frivolous and/or outdated. It is, for instance, illegal to own feathers from a songbird. If you pick up a robin's, or blue jay's, or finch's feather that was shed, and keep it, you are breaking the law and can be punished.
I've always thought the best way for a city to raise revenue would be for constant, random over-the-limit traffic tickets, instead of warnings. We all take Driver's Ed and understand when we drive too fast, and we do this all of the time.
The Illinois General Assembly writes so many duplicate laws that they periodically ammalgomate them into single laws and publish a current book of statutes as part of this synthesization. I am confident that this happens nationwide.
WHAT A WASTE OF OUR TAXPAYER MONEY!!!!!
If they were vigorously enforced we would KNOW about the stupid, unneccessary legislation on the books and be keen to watch our elected officials with one eye open at night.

the goal is a disarmed population, one step at a time, divide and conquer. Propose, "reasonable controls". that the uneducated buy off on.
Schemes like registration, permits, background checks, waiting periods, etc etc etc do nothing except create a black market, and make it a pain in the rear for the rest of us.
Guys like Hitler were all about registration, made it easier for him to round up the gun owners. Just go down to the court house and print out a list of all the gun owners.
The sheeple dont get it and just believe what the liberals tell them. Lets just pass a law and it will be all better. We have a president giving weapons to mexican drug dealers and muslims that want to and have killed Americans with weapons given to them by Obama and his appointed cronys. Yet he is all about more restrictions on ME ?
Wake up Americans, here is a news flash for you. Criminals and murderers tend to not follow the law.
