How old is too old to start?
I have my eye on a very well put together quarter mare. She's 15, well handled, excellent ground manners, but not broke. Is she too old to start? She's been a brood mare til this point.

We backed a 14 yr old arab broodmare and she took to it like a duck to water and made a great riding horse.:-)

I don't think 15 is too old. But I would be especially careful to get a PPE just to make sure she is in working order, and her joints are sufficient for riding. Is there a reason that she isn't backed?

They never intended to back her, just breed her, I've received copies of her records from her vet but I'm goin to have a PPE done just on the safe side.

There are good points and bad points. The good part is, an older horse is over all the goofy spooky baby stuff most of the time. They're mentally easier to handle.

A downfall is, especially with a broodmare- they can have an attitude and they're obviously bigger and stronger than a baby. A broody may also have issues with her back, hips etc from birthing foals. So, yes, a PPE definitely and I'd have x-rays done.

Too old...not at all.
