I work for WP training barn. From what I see, much of this depends on how well horse is trained and how willing you are to listen and practice what the trainer is telling you to do.
These horses are "rode" constantly when showing, rider constantly is working to keep horse going correctly, and still has to make it look as if they are just up there. No major corrections in other words.
The ability of the horse, and the depth of training and how well the trainer does their job is of paramount importance to be successful in WP.
Lots to remember, use and keep in mind when in ring. Actually I think pound for pound so to speak, showing WP is one of the harder disciplines to learn well as it looks so "darn easy".
Listen to everything your instructor tells you, take full advantage of every moment you can spend at barn, even just watching, and I would also suggest watching as many of the WP videos from various shows, to identify things that you need to work on, how it should look and educating your eye for WP horses and riders.
And work, work, work. You can do this, and you will enjoy it too.
^could not have said it better myself! Not every horse is cut out to be a WP horse either....mindset is first and foremost important, combined with the right conformation. If you have those two things...and CORRECT training from someone who specializes in WP...you'll have the right horse for WP.
I'm wondering this too as I have always wanted to give it a try, just to try it really. :)
There is a true art to WP, as Palomine said. The art is riding the horse the whole time, on a drape rein, with the horse rated...and making it look like you are doing nothing at all.
Agree with Palomine:D,people see WP & think it's easy.W/T/C around a ring what is so hard about that?? well a good WP horse makes it look easy:wink: but it is alot of work to train a horse to have that "self carriage":-) they have to have correct training ,conditioning & natural ability to be able to do it well. Also needs a rider that knows how to get them to do it.
There are many bad examples of WP horses out there, horses that lack the natural physical ability & movement needed or poorly trained into false frames & gaits :-( Thinking that if they go slow enough that it correct...:-x
